Chapter
Twelve
I was hoping to make it to Denver, but when we reached Sterling, we only had an hour until sunrise. So, it was best we stopped there for the day. The city was quiet at that time of night, and I felt much more in control with that cold blood that Ax had gotten for me in my veins.
When I heard him walking the wide street behind me, I smiled at myself. Heâd kept away the entire night as we ran in the fields and the highways, staying away from cities and towns as much as we could. So far, no trouble, which I counted as a blessing. If everything went the same tonight, Iâd be in Arizona, and practically a free woman.
Right now, Ax didnât want to be near me because he knew what would happen if we talked again. We would do what we always didâfight, talk dirty until I got wet and he got hard, and then one of us would walk away because we had someplace to get to.
Except now.
We just needed to find a motel or an inn, and there was no other place to go for the rest of the day. Thereâd be a bed. Weâd end up fucking each otherâs brains out, no doubt. And I was already looking forward to it. Being away from him for a month had been torture, but Iâd managed because I hadnât had to actually see him, feel him, have him touch me the way only he knew how, listen to that sexy voice of his. But now that we were close to each other, it was worse. I craved him worse than blood.
âLetâs stop here for the day,â I said to the night, knowing heâd hear me.
âWe still have an hour,â he said from behind me.
I turned around, and he stopped walking, still ten feet away. âAfraid Iâll bite?â I said with a grin.
He raised a brow. âAfraid Iâll make you throw away those panties again.â
I laughed. I had put on a new pair of panties as soon as I cooled off, and of course heâd smelled them on me. âYouâll just carry them around in your pocket, too.â And I winked.
He sighed, shaking his head, as if he had already given up. âAnd youâll need water to clean yourself up.â
âYour tongue does a much better job at that.â
âMy tongue stays in my mouth.â
Now, I was intrigued. Folding my arms in front of my chest, I smiled. âWhat are you gonna doâstay away from me until sunrise?â
âPrecisely,â he said, then continued walking.
âAre you serious?â Because he couldnât possibly be.
But he walked right past me, looking ahead like I wasnât even there.
âAx!â
âThereâs a hotel over there. Letâs get to it. We need the rest.â And he didnât look back at me at all.
âFine,â I muttered, and with the stupid plastic bag in my hand, I followed him to the hotel. He didnât actually mean itâhe was just bluffing. Heâd change his mind as soon as we were alone.
