* * * *

Jake wasn’t worried the first two times Damien didn’t answer his phone. He knew Damien and Hudson were at a party, something about a new art gallery, so maybe Damien didn’t hear his phone.

The third time, he started to worry. Damien always had his phone with him. He needed to be reachable for his job. That meant he always answered phone calls, even Jake’s. It might only be to tell him he was busy and to call back later, but he answered.

After the fourth phone call, Jake got up from his couch and ditched his pajamas, putting on jeans and a T-shirt. He was going to go to Hudson’s place to see if by any chance they were there. He didn’t know what he’d do if they weren’t, but he thought he might be able to find out where the party was.

The drive to Hudson’s building was a short one. It was getting late, and most people were home, so the streets were mostly empty. Hudson had given Jake the authorization to park in one of his three spots in the building’s parking lot, and Jake took advantage of it, noticing Hudson’s car was there. That didn’t mean anything, though. As far as he knew, Damien and Hudson had taken a cab to the party.

The car’s presence didn’t mean they were home. It didn’t mean Damien was too busy to answer his phone.

Jake trusted both Damien and Hudson. Hudson might have been an asshole, telling Jake he was going to seduce Damien if Jake didn’t want him, but Jake did want Damien, and he’d made it clear. He’d been to Hudson’s place a few times and called Damien often enough that Hudson had to have noticed it.

Besides, even if Hudson did try to get in Damien’s pants, Jake trusted Damien. That was one thing he’d never doubted. He might have doubted them being together, he might have doubted Damien’s age, but he knew Damien wouldn’t have sex with another guy, especially not after they’d talked and decided to get to know each other. He’d accused him of wanting to be with Hudson, but he’d known it wasn’t the truth.

The elevator took a lifetime to get down to the parking lot, and another lifetime to get up. The annoying music made Jake want to rip the speakers out, even though he found himself humming and batting his foot along with the rhythm.

He launched himself out of the elevator as soon as the doors opened and rushed to Hudson’s front door. He knocked and waited.

No one opened.

He tried calling Damien again, hoping he might hear the phone ringing from inside the apartment, but the only thing he heard was silence.

“God fucking dammit,” he muttered. He resisted the urge to kick the door down and called again as he hammered his fist against the door. He was probably disturbing the neighbors, if Hudson even had any. Jake wouldn’t be surprised if Hudson owned the entire floor or something.

The elevator dinged, and Jake turned to look.
