Someone was calling out to me. I knew that now because I could feel the person while driving home. The feeling was similar to the emotional connection I felt to others but deeper.

I could feel this—person like I could feel my own pulse.

When I got to the ranch, I grabbed the bags and headed inside, intent on telling Killian what happened, and I found him sitting in the kitchen. There was a solemn look on his face, and I paused.

An open file was on the island, and I immediately knew what it was. He got the information about Harrison, but I wasn’t ready for this, not today and after what just happened. We’d waited long enough though it was best I got this over with.

Neither of us said anything until I placed the grocery bags on the island and sat beside him.

“Just tell me,” I said. “Tell me everything.”

“Harrison was a team leader on an excavation and was asked to bring only a trusted few with him," Killian explained while handing me one of the papers from the file that showed a picture of several people standing before a white pillar covered in dirt and dust. “A lot was lost due to the accident, but this picture was recovered.”

He pointed to the picture in my hand. Harrison and the other archeologists went missing, and Harrison looked the same as the picture I had of him. He was also wearing a similar name tag pinned to his jeans, so perhaps both photos were taken during this excavation.

“Nothing could be found about the company that hired them,” Killian said. “There is only a money trail leading back to a now-dissolved company that funded the study of many excavations of ancient civilizations.”

Ancient civilizations, I thought to myself, and Killian continued speaking.

"No one knows what caused the explosion. The temple was unearthed, and a chamber was found underground. Harrison and the others on his team went in, and the explosion went off. The temple crumbled in on itself and the surrounding area like quicksand.”

“Goddess,” I muttered under my breath. “No wonder the bodies weren’t found.”

“Those who survived had to be dug out, but Harrison and the others were further underground in the chamber when it all happened.” Killian eyed the papers. “Quicksand was what the public was told, but the people who survived the accident and what's in this file say something different. People heard whispers throughout the dig sight, and a bright light appeared from inside the underground chamber.”

I sat up.

“Then there was a pulse, like a shockwave. The light covered several meters of the dig sight, and the ground caved in.” Killian took a breath. “It was like someone turned on floodlights and then off again instantly. So it wasn’t a normal explosion.”

"Okay, hold on," I placed the picture on the island. "Whispers were heard by everyone, lights appeared in the chamber that got brighter, covering everything, and after that, the temple caved in?”

“Yes,” Killian answered. “It all happened in that order and within seconds.
