“I really don’t see why we have to go to this thing.” Autumn slumped against the back of the seat and crossed her arms in front of her chest.

Summer sighed behind the wheel. She usually didn’t volunteer to drive, but they had argued enough over going to this party that she had insisted. “We’ve been over this. It would be so rude not to go. Leah has put a lot of work into it, and everyone is looking forward to the celebration.”

“We’re having our own Samhain, so why do we have to go to something that’s Halloween and Zimryr and whatever else? We’re going to get everything we need from our own ceremony.” It wasn’t that Autumn didn’t enjoy parties, and back in her college days, she had been just as eager to drink the night away as anyone else. But there were more important things to do now. And the quiet festivities she had planned with her sister included summoning their friend Naomi, who had died several years ago. Autumn always looked forward to their seances.

“Samhain is going to be wonderful,” Summer agreed as she turned off the main highway and onto the road that lead to Holden’s house. “But so is this. At the very least, you should be happy to support Leah. And I don’t want to hear an ounce of attitude out of you once we get out of this car. You can plaster a smile on your face, nod at the appropriate times, and pretend to be grateful for all of Leah’s efforts.”

“Yes, mother,” Autumn retorted. In fact, she was certain she had heard very similar speeches from their mother in the past. “At least it’s not a costume party. I would not want to be subjected to that sort of humiliation.” She had settled instead for a simple black cocktail dress and low heels. Her tall stature meant that she rarely wore anything too high, not wanting to tower like an Amazon over the rest of her friends.

“What? You could have just painted your face green, worn your pointy hat, and brought your broom,” Summer suggested with a smile. “It would be easy for Holden and his friends to dress up, too. They could just shift into their dragon form, and then we could have a fun game of guessing who was who.” She giggled at the thought.

“You would have a distinct advantage there.” Autumn had been supportive of Summer’s new relationship with Xander. It didn’t bother her that he was a dragon or that he had come from another world, and she certainly wasn’t upset that being with Xander meant she had an instant family. Nora was an adorable little girl, one that Autumn was glad to call her niece. But she occasionally wondered just what it was like to be with a man like that, one who held just as much power as she did, if of a different kind.
