Chapter Thirteen

The police department sent over Detective August. No one in town had apparently bothered to learn the man’s real name, because she’d only ever heard him referred to as his month in the Everlasting sheriff department’s yearly law enforcement calendar. Even his nametag read, “August.” Being one of twelve men Sheriff Francine Bull had hired to represent the police department, he was everything a calendar model to raise money for a cause should be—attractive with black hair and green eyes, and with a physique built by endless hours in a gym. He also was everything a good cop shouldn’t be—lazy, dismissive, and really bad at his job.

August’s reputation among the other officers wasn’t the greatest. They made jokes behind his back about his lack of experience and speculated about the ways he could have been promoted to the rank of detective. None of which were favorable.

The calendar boys were not all for show. There were some genuinely good cops on the force—Deputy March was a stand-up character, and September seemed popular with several of the townsfolk. In a town like Everlasting, those of a paranormal persuasion had a way of policing themselves.

Unfortunately for Marcy, August was the only one available to speak to her, since this was what he called, “a non-emergency report that did not require the full attention of the department while they were shorthanded due to Sheriff Bull being on vacation.” Halfway through voicing her concerns she noticed the man was drawing doodles on his notepad. Marcy wasn’t surprised. The curse wouldn’t have given her anyone competent to take a statement. Before she even finished giving her statement, he was requisitioning cupcakes to take back to the office and a hazelnut latte.

As he left, Marcy frowned at Anna, “He told me to put his order on the police department tab, but I have a feeling those are all going into his mouth and not into the department’s employee lounge.”

“Don’t bother,” Anna said. “The main thing is we made the report. Jackson will go by the police station later to follow up and make sure the report was actually filed. Lucky for us, August is easily swayed by Jackson’s promises of front page coverage.”

“I’m grateful,” Marcy said, “but that almost seems wrong. Jackson should be writing an exposé on the incompetence of some of the police detectives.”

“Oh, I think there is such a story in August’s future,” Anna said.

Jackson sat at a table with his eyes closed. It looked like he was sleeping sitting up, but in reality, he was patrolling outside on the sidewalks by projecting his consciousness out of his body. No one would be able to see him, but he would see and hear everything he moved past.

“Does it ever bother you he can do that?” Marcy wondered aloud. “Do you ever worry he’s going to follow you when you leave the shop? Or peek when you’re wrapping Christmas presents?”

“Not really,” Anna said. “On one hand, I trust him. On the other hand, I can feel when he’s around, so he can’t sneak up on me.
