Chapter 6: Stay With Me

Weston was sure the camera captured the look of delight on his face and hopefully not his surprise. He’d had no expectations for this evening, which made what Danica had just said to him so stunning. Had he even heard her correctly?

Danica shifted and cradled his face between her hands. “Still want to talk?” she asked. “Something tells me no.” Her eyes lowered to his crotch, and she smirked.

Yep, he’d heard her correctly.

Hell, no, he didn’t want to talk. He wanted to peel her out of that dress and take her right then and there. But as bad as he wanted her, he needed to come clean first. “I’m not who you think I am.”

She pulled away, a questioning expression on her face. “Who are you?”

He brushed a bent finger across her cheek. “Will you allow me to show you?”

When she nodded, he ushered her from the booth, led her out of the ballroom and past the elevator they’d taken earlier. After a maze of turns, they arrived at the private elevator. The lines crawling across Danica’s forehead revealed her confusion, but she entered without protest.

Inside the enclosure, they stared at each other, neither breaking the intense silence. He’d give anything to know what was racing through her mind. Would those enticing brown eyes view him differently when she learned the truth? God, he hoped not.

Danica drew in a sharp breath when the elevator came to a halt and the door open. Once they exited, her gaze swooped across every inch of his residence. He followed as she cautiously ambled forward.

“This is who I am,” he said.

“I don’t…” She turned to face him, the sheer fabric of her dress sweeping the marble floor. “This is the penthouse?”

He folded his arms across his chest and gave a single nod.

She closed the distance between them. “You…live here?”

He nodded again.

“Jesus.” She turned and took in more of the space. “Cupid’s Arrow must pay very well.”

Weston moved close behind her. She flinched when he rested his hands on her waist. He rotated her to face him. “I don’t work for Cupid’s Arrow; I own it. Kinda.”

“What? Kinda? What…does that mean exactly?”

“It’s my sister’s company, but I’m a silent partner. Very silent.” He laughed, but Danica didn’t. “My sister needed my help. Too many women. Not enough men. Long story short, I agreed to be one of her Cupid Fellows for the night.” He attempted to interpret the void look on her face, but came up empty. “Say something.”

“I…” She rested a hand over her collar bone. “…think I should go,” she said, hiking her dress and hurrying toward the elevator.

“Hey,” he said, moving after her. “This doesn’t change anything. I’m still—”

Danica barked a laugh as she whipped around to face him. “Are you kidding? This changes everything.”

“How, Danica? I’m the same person I was fifteen minutes ago.”

“No, you’re not, Weston. Don’t you see that?”

“No, I don’t. Please, help me understand. Help me see it from your perspective.” He couldn’t believe they were having their first lover’s quarrel and weren’t even lovers…yet.
