Chapter Twelve

On Monday, Bianca was still coming down from her holiday-induced food coma. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were followed by a lazy Sunday that was spent indulging in way too many leftovers and watching movies with Jonny.

And thinking. She’d spent a lot of time doing that.

She was still doing all the aforementioned thinking while she organized the waiting room in between patients. Jack had texted her yesterday, asking if she wanted to meet up this week. He hadn’t encroached on her holiday time, but he was showing her that he was still interested. She liked that. And she should like him. Well, she should at least like him more.

But, and there was no reason to delude herself any longer, ever since a certain blonde bartender had wandered into her life, it was hard to strike up enthusiasm. Because now she knew how Maeve felt in her arms.

Jonny had teased her again yesterday about whether her boyfriend and girlfriend knew about one another, and honestly, it was starting to feel a little bit like that. Even though nothing sexual was going on with Maeve, Bianca felt like they had a connection.

Did Maeve feel it too? Did she lie in bed like a lovesick teenager, staring at her ceiling and wondering what Bianca was doing the same way Bianca wondered about her? Did she maybe keep her phone a little closer instead of leaving it laying around the house, just so she didn’t miss a text?

Bianca really needed to get it together. Her quest for something more serious was putting a damper on her sex life, and even though she knew it wasn’t just the proximity to Maeve and her body that was causing Bianca to feel this way, their um… closeness, for lack of a better word, wasn’t really helping matters.

How could someone with all those hard edges be so soft?

When she let out a little sound of frustration, she heard Kelly laugh behind her.

“If you organize those newspapers any more forcefully, you’re probably going to rub the words off.”

Bianca looked down at her hands, where she had a stack of newspaper perfectly aligned, her fingers crumpling the edges. She smiled sheepishly and placed them on the end table before turning toward Kelly. “Got a little distracted.”

Kelly studied her for a second before she seemed to accept the answer. “Did you have a good holiday?”

Just held Maeve in my arms as we looked at the Christmas tree before I did this weird thing where I gave her a nose kiss and practically word-vomited my feelings all over her. “Sure. It was great. How was yours?”

“Busy. Luna insisted on wearing her Batman costume to Christmas dinner. Quinn, who’s apparently been trying to cultivate her cooking skills, brought more side dishes than could fit in my kitchen. The turkey spent an hour in the oven before I realized it wasn’t on.” Kelly pointed at herself. “I take responsibility for that one.”

Bianca laughed. “Sounds like a family gathering of the truest form.”

“It was,” Kelly said with a sincere smile.
