Chapter

Eighteen

I aggressively rubbed my fingertips. “What the hell?”

It must have been there from running through the maze, and I hadn’t noticed. I’d been so preoccupied with getting back to Aunt Joyce that I hadn’t bothered to even notice.

The dream had been so real. But I was safe in my normal room with the medallion around my wrist.

I checked the floor for centipedes before walking to the bathroom. I undressed quickly and stepped into the shower, turning the water on as hot as I could stand.

As the water cascaded down my body, steam filled the room, putting me in a warm cloud of serenity. I stood under the showerhead, letting the water stream down my body, erasing away every bit of the dream.

After a solid twenty minutes, I stepped out of the shower, wrapping myself in a worn towel. I padded the tiled floor to the mirror and wiped away the warm condensation.

Dark ink-like stains circled my eyes, displaying my lack of sleep. My cheekbones were jagged cliffs of bone, a haunting gauntness that hadn’t been there before the medallion had come into my possession.

The medallion needed to be fed, and when I didn’t provide it fear, it took what it could use from me. It wasn’t enough, though, because, with the medallion, I didn’t feel fear.

Perhaps I wasn’t strong enough to bear the medallion because I looked like a ghoul. I was fatigued, weary, and malnourished, and there wasn’t enough makeup in the drawer to hide it from Aunt Joyce.

Of course, that didn’t stop me from trying. I applied concealer and foundation before drawing a thick line under my lashes. It looked like I was headed to the club Charlie and I had visited the night Wyatt died.

I stepped out of the bathroom, hesitating in my room. Aunt Joyce was speaking to someone — their words were indistinguishable mumbles, which faded to nothing.

Cautiously, I took deliberate steps toward the stairs, trying to move soundlessly. I peered down the stairwell, but I couldn’t see Aunt Joyce or her visitor.

The voices became clearer as I walked down the stairs, but I still wasn’t sure who Aunt Joyce was talking to.

“I heard the paramedics stopped by last night,” the male voice said.

“It was nothing,” Aunt Joyce said, her voice groggy. She looked to the side, smiling when her eyes locked with mine. “Good morning, Remy. The sheriff stopped by to check on me. Wasn’t that nice of him?”

“Very,” I said, nodding my head in his direction. “Just going to make some coffee.”

Aunt Joyce picked up her cup from the coffee table and handed it to me. “Could you make me another cup?”

“Sure,” I said, turning to Sheriff Ross. “Would you like anything?”

Sheriff Ross chuckled. “I’ve already had my share of caffeine for the day, but thank you.”

“Water?” Aunt Joyce asked.

“Nothing, thank you,” Sheriff Ross said, clasping his hands together.

I slipped into the kitchen, quietly moving around so I could eavesdrop more easily. The sheriff asked her again about the paramedics, this time telling her that he was worried when he heard and rushed right over.
