Michael had expressly forbidden Lili to go to Earth, even though she’d pleaded and explained about the man who taught Crystal to open the breaches. He’d said he and a friend would look into it, but later, because teaching her to harness her powers was more important. And then after dinner, he’d sat her down in a small box room just off the dining hall where old weapons and bits of leather armour were stored, mats on the floor, and he’d guided her through a lesson.

Michael thought Lili would be able to call on both her magics, wherever she was, if she found inner calm through meditation and breathing. Lili didn’t tell him that the only time her magic seemed to rise was when she was angry or emotional, or that both magics had only ever come to her when she was on Earth fighting Gabriel.

He wanted Lili to learn how to use her magic properly, how to call it and have it respond easily, how to repress it when it was unwanted, and Cerny too had told her to practise calling and releasing it. Well, there was only one place she could do that, Lili reasoned. And if sneaking out with Crystal in tow happened to also allow her to track down this Eddie who’d shown her how to open breaches … that would be a coincidence.

“You do realise I could run as soon as we touch down on Earth, right?” Crystal drawled, following Lili through the halls of Michael’s tower towards the back alley door.

“You won’t,” Lili replied.

“Yeah?” Crystal laughed, tossing her head, her black braids swinging. “And why won’t I?”

“Because.” Lili glanced at her sideways. “You must be worried about your sister. And you must realise that staying with me, being close to people who could find out what happened to her like Michael and Lucifer, is your only chance of finding her again.”

Crystal pressed her lips together, her mouth coated in dark lipstick to match her black eyeshadow and the dark metal glinting in her nose. “You’re a real bitch, you know that?”

Lili blinked, but refused to react to the insult. Gabriel had called her worse, anyway, and it wasn’t like she was in love with Crystal; this didn’t cut as deep. But still, anger rose, bringing a chill to the air around them. In that soft voice she’d discovered in Hell, Lili said, “Someone used you, Crystal, to encourage the war between Heaven and Hell. They took your sister and left a demon in her place. A demon who led me to you, who obviously wanted me to bring you to Hell.”

Crystal pursed her mouth. “So?”

“So. I brought you to Heaven, where it’s safer. You haven’t even said thank you.”

Crystal rolled her eyes. “Thanks for kidnapping me, babe.”

Lili made a sound in the back of her throat.

“I don’t make much of your new bestie,” a dry voice remarked behind them, and Lili spun so fast she went dizzy, reaching for a nearby plinth and nearly knocking off a bronze bust of Athena.
