Your most likely coverage in the media is with your local media. Radio, in my personal experience, is the most powerful medium among television, radio and newspapers. Be sure to reach out to every talk show personality in town who may have an interest in your topic. It may take some time to identify them, but radio shows that are on daily do have a need to find interesting people to have on their shows each day. Make sure they know about you and why you’d make a great guest.
You can identify individuals who may write about your issue by visiting your local paper’s website and looking for the staff. As they are in the newsgathering business, they generally have a list of email addresses and phone numbers on the website to help you identify exactly the right person to contact.
Television people are often the most difficult to reach, but most television stations have websites with at least some general email address for sending news tips. Use that if you can’t find a better contact to get your message inside the station. You can also try to interact with key reporters through their Twitter accounts, but many ignore Twitter interactions.
Remember, the media loves a good human-interest story. The broadcast media folks have a regulatory obligation to serve their communities, so they are effectively required to air some stories about causes. You can bring attention to your cause and your campaign, and you can reach your fundraising goals. Don’t be shy and don’t shy away from the work. Before you know it, people all around your community will be talking about you and your cause.
