CHAPTER 23

Grateful that her roommates had gone down to the law student happy hour early, Sierra laid on the couch doubling as her bed and stared at her phone. She wondered if she had Jordan’s number whether she would use it now. It’s not like they’d made a concrete plan to spend time together, but she hadn’t expected Jordan to disappear either.

Restless, Sierra crossed the cramped room and stood at the window with the view of a cement wall. She debated going up to Jordan’s room. To ask her why she’d ghosted her after they’d had such a great night and following morning. She looked at the door but didn’t move toward it. She didn’t want to develop a reputation for being a thirsty weirdo constantly showing up at her door uninvited.

Sierra pressed her palm to her stomach. She wasn’t used to waiting around for a woman to call her, but she couldn’t pretend that Jordan was just anybody. Jordan was someone she missed the moment they were apart. There was never enough time with her.

The ache radiated from Sierra’s stomach and curled around her heart. If this is what longing for someone felt like, she wondered why anyone wanted to feel it. It was like being suspended in the air while grasping for a rope just out of reach.

A knock forced Sierra out of her thoughts. Her pulse spiked in her neck.

Jordan?

Drying her suddenly clammy hands on her jeans, Sierra strode to the door, stopping at the mirror to toss her wavy hair to one side and check out her outfit.

Clearing her throat and putting a hand in her back pocket, she tried to look casual. Stop, you’re trying too hard. She dropped her hand and shook out her tense muscles before opening the door.

“Hey!” Viv greeted excitedly.

“Hi,” she replied, trying and failing to match her energy.

“Are you coming down for happy hour?” Viv asked as she walked into the room after Sierra moved out of the way.

“I don’t know. Maybe later,” she replied noncommittally.

Viv plopped down on the couch and cocked her head to the side. “Are you okay? You’ve seemed not quite like yourself lately.”

The direct question from someone she didn’t think knew her well enough to judge whether she was being off, was destabilizing. If Viv was picking up on how out of sorts she felt, she must really be wearing her thoughts on her sleeve.

“No worries, I’m good,” she replied, trying to arm herself with some cool. “Let’s go check out that happy hour.”

Viv smiled. “Yeah? I didn’t mean to pressure you or anything. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“No, no. I’m good. Let’s go.” She didn’t explain that it wouldn’t do her any good to stay in her room all mopey and alone.

The bar was on the roof of the taller of the two hotel towers. Inside, a wall of screens playing all kinds of sporting events presented a busy backdrop to the long bar.

“Law students do love a happy hour,” Sierra muttered to herself as she surveyed the densely packed crowd.
