Max glared at his cousin. He glared at her like he’d seen her brothers do throughout his childhood.

“Yeah, that doesn’t work on me.” Char took a large bite of her slice.

He needed to do damage control, and getting Char away would be helpful.

Relief had filled him when he realized the TPC wouldn’t come up with any more surprise money, seeing that he had funded them for this last round with his purchase of Maddie’s sculpture. He should have texted his assistant at work with the news, but instead he had ironed Maddie’s clothes, had a workout, and taken her out for pizza. His mother really was going to be impressed. But when he’d seen inside Maddie’s luggage, he couldn’t help himself. He’d wanted to rush down to the luxury shop next door to where he’d bought the turtle bracelet and buy her a whole new wardrobe. But “know your opponent’s strategy” was practically his mantra. He knew spending more money on her wouldn’t be something she appreciated.

He needed to get rid of Char. Really, Char was cool for being raised in a family with so many brothers. It surprised him that she’d gone back to the ranch after college; he would have thought she’d try to escape them. She was complaining on and on about what Talia had done.

Max remembered the giant frozen concoctions he’d seen at the little bar. “Do you want a drink?” That’s what you did on vacations, right? He didn’t take vacations. Business trips were his only respite.

“That’d be great,” Charlotte huffed at him. “Make yourself useful.”

“Thanks, Max.” Maddie had turned shy since Charlotte had turned up.

“Anything specific?” Max asked.

“Margarita or one of those pineapple drinks I see people carrying around,” said Maddie.

“Dragon Ale for me,” grunted Charlotte.

He wandered off toward the smaller of the two bars. A short bartender with long dark hair was performing, pouring long shots into a row of shot glasses. She used stools strategically placed behind the counter, hopping between them to help her patrons.

“One of those pineapple things”—Max pointed to a woman holding a huge drink at the end of the bar—“and two Dragon Ales.”

“Sorry, we don’t serve Dragon Ale on the pool deck,” replied the bartender. “It’s available in the Bjørn bar, though.”

“Then, two large pineapples.” He glanced over at Maddie; he’d get a drink later. He smiled inwardly at the thought of giving his badass second cousin a fruity girly drink in a big honking pineapple cup. She probably never had anything but Dragon Ale and Troll Ale rotgut.

The girls from their table last night were sitting at the end of the bar, or two of the girls were. Hazel and Camila. There was a large ring open around Camila. Her cancer permitted the space. He moved down the bar to wait with them for the drinks.

“Max.” Hazel was wearing . . . Well, he couldn’t actually comprehend what she was wearing. It was navy blue with large orange flowers, and her hair was rolled up like she
