Chapter Eight

Entering the large room, it surprised them when they saw how full the room was packed with reindeer, elves, fairies, ælfs, and other members of the higher echelon of the CPD.

“This is what happens when you hit the all-call alert button,” Krieg said when he appeared from the crowd, holding a pair of tablets in his arms. “Greetings, Mister Jacob, good to meet you in person.”

“Blitzen’s lightning! Didn’t expect this response so fast,” Strike said.

“The great Strike of Alaska called, so everyone hoofed it here. Sooo many portals,” Krieg said.

“Hope you know what you’re going to tell them,” Jacob said.

“Me too,” Krieg said.

Strike rolled his eyes. “Did you do the research I asked?”

“Yes. You’re not going to like it.”

“How bad?”

“Baaad,” Krieg said.

“How bad?” Strike repeated.

“Systemic. All divisions have issues.”

“Time to kick some tails, asses, and get their shit together before the whole thing falls apart. This is one of the reasons why I never visit here.” Strike placed his hands together, linked his fingers, and pulled against them to crack his knuckles. Then he pointed to his cousin. “Find the main computers and plug in. Get things ready—”

“May I inquire as to why one of my senior reindeer hit an all-call alert without informing me first?” a gentleman with a deep voice interrupted.

Swallowing hard when the booming voice cleared over all the rabble, Strike held still for a moment. “Lord Kringle, sir, greetings,” he said.

“Icicles,” Jacob muttered.

All three turned to face the latest Lord Kringle, scion of Ded Moroz, to help rule over the dimension with the Lord of Winter, Jokul Frosti, and Mother Nature, Lady Gaia.

Standing over six feet, Lord Kristophe Kringle VI was a well-built man with broad muscular shoulders, a strong chest, and long legs. Unlike the tales and songs, he didn’t sport a rounded belly. For a day’s work, he chose a forest-green button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up his forearms, a velvet brown vest and trousers, and polished knee-high black boots. The beloved deep red outfit only appeared during the Christmas celebrations. He kept his snow-white mustache and beard trimmed short. His white hair was long enough to curl around his shoulders with a few sweeping locks around the front. His bright blue eyes were usually full of cheer and laughter, but now they narrowed and darkened while he studied Strike.

“Lord Kringle, greetings, I didn’t expect you to be here. I wanted to go over our findings and issues with the rest of the team before we spoke with the council,” Strike said.

“We?”

Jacob stepped forward. “Me, sir.”

“Jacob Serac, the America NE Frost,” Kringle said without asking Jacob anything. He lifted one dark eyebrow. “What are you doing mixed up with the CPD?”

A little surprised Lord Kringle would know him from all the other Frosts, Jacob found himself standing a little straighter under the powerful man’s steady gaze. “I had an issue earlier with my crystal heart partner and Strike assisted me in correcting some problems. In turn, we discovered there is a deeper thread of danger running through what was a simple problem.
