The coyote tracked the scent through town and up into the woods. On the edge of the hot springs pool, the place where he had first truly seen her, Cal shifted back into a man.

Her scent is laced with fear. We must keep going.

Cal shook his head, still panting from the run. “Didn't you sense what else she's feeling?” He pressed his hand to his heart. “Can't you feel that?”

She's terrified, lonely, confused. Our mate needs us.

“She needs to be alone,” Cal said. It was a feeling he knew well. A coyote is a pack animal and Cal felt the pull of the pack as strong as any, finding his in his friends in Fairbright. But the canine is also a lone hunter, demands its solitude, and Cal knew that need as well.

The coyote lowered his head in acceptance.

“You forget I know stuff too, sometimes,” Cal said.

Elspeth was a shifter, a coyote. He had to trust that meant she knew what she was doing and her animal would guide her to the right place, as coyotes had been mythic guides to many through the ages.

He respected her need for solitude. Still, he wasn't about to abandon her. Shifting back into the coyote for speed, they sprinted back into town.

He knew Elspeth rented Brock's little cottage. Her coyote would bring her home eventually. And when she needed him, he would be there.
