They pulled up to the house late -- around nine thirty, damn near ten -- and it was a welcome sight to have the kitchen light on. Better than that, the entire roof was lined with big, bright Christmas lights.
âLook at that!â It wasnât home yet, but it was getting better every time. âI had Vicki leave the light on, but she didnât tell me her boys had put Christmas lights up. She said she stocked the fridge and made muffins.â She came in twice a month to flush toilets and dust, clear the fridge. That shit.
Mackey hadnât bothered with the pain pills last night, but tonight he was thinking he ought. Everything hurt. Everything.
Still, they were home.
âVicki?â Sid shut the truck off and stretched, and he heard Sidâs back pop. âOh man. That felt good.â
âLittle lady that I pay to clean. Her husband and boys fix fence and roofs and shit. They cleared the road for us.â They were the ones whoâd taught him about bears.
He had a momma bear on his land. Damn, that rocked his world.
The house was a big old thing -- all windows and pine. It was going to be something one day. It was going to sparkle.
âOh, thatâs handy that you have them.â Sid slid out of the truck with a groan. The man had obviously had enough of driving. âBeautiful night. Look at all the stars. Iâll grab the bags.â
âYeah. Iâm coming.â He took his go bag and his gear. He was fixinâ to have to do a shit-ton of laundry. âCome on in. Iâll give you the tour.â
âTell me I get a tour of the outside when itâs daylight. What an amazing place. The views from all those windows must be incredible.â Sid craned his neck to look up at the second floor. âAnd the lights⦠so neat. Festive. It actually feels kind of like Christmas now.â
âThey surprised me with those.â He took the stairs slow, rubbing the belly of the bear carved into the column, and then put in the code for the front door. âCome on in.â
The house smelled like sap and vanilla and leather, and he flipped a switch, letting the lights fill the front room. âKitchenâs behind you. You got your choice of rooms -- the master is upstairs, and thereâs one guest room down here thatâs all made up.â
âIâll do the guest then. If itâs easy. Thank you.â Sid walked into the room and wandered, looking impressed. âSo much woodwork, so no wonder itâs taking forever to fix up. But itâs beautiful. It will be gorgeous when itâs done. Wow.â
âThank you. Itâs--â Going to be home someday. He hoped. â--All mine.â
âIâm a little jealous. I own nothing. I donât even own a car.â Sid dumped his bag at the foot of the stairs. âTour first? Or are you hungry?â
âCome on, tour first.â Theyâd been snacking all day, after all. âThere are six bedrooms -- or so they told me. Thereâs four rooms filled with old crap. I have two cleaned out.
