This 1980 poster of “kook-right” Reagan in gunfighter stance (left) was originally deployed by his political opponents, with some effectiveness, in 1968. With the newly transformed frontier myth now working more to Reagan’s advantage, however, the most prolific Reagan ’80 cowboy poster (right) replaced “Marlboro Country” with the slogan “America: Reagan Country.” (Left: Vic Dinnerstein, The Fascist Gun in the West, Photograph: Universal Pictures, 1980, offset poster.
