Chapter Twelve – Zoe

Did the mountain move under her, as his lips pressed against hers? Or maybe there was an earthquake? But this region never had earthquakes. That left one possibility, Samuel. Or, more precisely, Samuel’s lips. On hers.

He was gentle, at first. His lips questioning her, searching for an answer. And she gave it to him. Her mouth opening, to allow his tongue to slip inside her mouth. Their tongues entwined, and she sighed in contentment; this was so right.

How long they lay together, kissing, touching, nothing overtly sexual—he didn’t make a dive for her breasts, like most men did—but he aroused her all the same. She wanted him. If she could have anything in her life right now, it would be Samuel.

And that gave her hope. She thought back to what his mom had said, about them all pitching in and helping with Jeremy. Not exactly what you were supposed to be thinking when a man had his tongue in your mouth and a hand on your inner thigh, but her brain was searching for how she could have Samuel in her life.

She pulled back. That was crazy thinking. One kiss and she was dreaming of marriage and kids. She was desperate, and he had given her some attention, a thing lacking in her life.

“Are you OK?” Samuel asked, his hand still on her thigh, teasing her; she wanted him to move it higher, to ease the ache she had for him. But first she had questions.

“What are we doing here, Samuel?” she asked.

“Well, we did come to sketch…”

“Seriously. You know what I mean.”

His eyes darkened, as if great pools of emotion were opening up to her, and she wanted to dive right in. “I’m different than most guys.”

“I can see that,” she agreed.

“I’m different in a way you can’t imagine.” He was hinting at something, as if testing her, seeing how far he could push her.

“Are you going to tell me?” she asked, her heartbeat skipping around with a mixture of panic and excitement. He wasn’t lying, there was something about him. As she looked deep into his eyes, she could see it. Just below the surface. Or she was imagining things, and he was leading her on just like Otto had led her on. Perhaps not after her money, but after something else. Well, it wasn’t her virginity, that was gone; maybe this cowboy simply wanted another notch on his bedpost.

“I want to tell you,” he said, and she believed his honesty. Was he that good a liar?

“Then why don’t you?” she asked.

“Because we’re a long way from home if you freak out.” He gave a short laugh, nervous, looking away into the distance. When he finally looked back toward her and their eyes met, the uncertainty there was so intense, it took her breath away.

She placed her hand on his cheek, stroking it with her thumb. He smiled, weakly, a boyish charm overriding the predatory man he had been only seconds before. “I won’t run.”

He turned his head, and kissed the inside of her palm.
