Chapter Fourteen

Eynd felt a little better, at least physically, after getting something to eat and drink and relieving herself behind a tree. It was more rustic than she was used to, and she could just imagine her prim mom having an utter cow at needing to do something like that. But Eynd was an opportunist, and beggars couldn’t be choosers when it came to such things.

The van was old but the seat was comfortable, and after a day of being tied to a chair, she wasn’t going to complain. Much.

She was still highly irritated by everything that had happened, particularly that the fairy had gotten the drop on her. Eynd had been taught as a youth not to take anything for granted when it came to her own safety and survival. She’d clearly gotten comfortable in the daytime and didn’t worry about being taken or used by a coven enemy for a nefarious purpose. Because she moved around during the day and could defend herself, she’d never worried about someone taking her. Clearly, she was an idiot.

But her idiocy aside, she was with her truemates and their brothers. She didn’t have to wonder what her mother would think of her having two mates, let alone them being bear shifters. She’d probably need to take a rest on her fainting couch for the scandal she’d surely endure at her wild daughter’s behavior.

“You’re polar bears, right?” she asked.

“Yes,” Spike said.

She turned in the seat and looked at him. He was too damn sexy for his own good. All smoldering dark eyes and stacked with muscles.

Then there was Wraith, with his dark hair and blue eyes, equally muscular but with a sweet smile that one hundred percent did not make her want to smile too.

“How did you guys get the nickname The Shadows?”

Spike gave her a long, quiet look. “Before I explain that, I want you to know that those days are over for us.”

“You mean the coven-killing stuff?”

He nodded solemnly. “I mean, we’ll kill to keep you safe, and to keep our family safe, but working at the behest of a vampire to destroy another one for territorial gain isn’t going to be something we’ll pursue again.”

“I work for Mishka.”

“We know,” Wraith said. He moved his bucket and sat next to his brother. “How long have you worked for him?”

“A few years. I like Cleveland and he’s a good boss. My parents’ coven isn’t like Cleveland. Their master doesn’t really care about his people unless they can do something for him. Mishka takes care of everyone in the coven, whether they’re part of his family or not.”

“Family?” Spike asked.

“You call it his inner circle, but he calls it his family. They’re a tightknit group, but they don’t just watch out for each other, they all watch out for everyone.”

“Do you live in the club?” Wraith asked.

“No. I have a place on the water.”

“What water? Lake Erie?” Spike asked.

“Off Lake Erie. I live on the Vermilion River.”

“You like living on the water?” Wraith asked.
