“A little birdie told me your magick works like a charm,” Ezra remarks, a smile on his face as he sips his tea.

“It’s hardly magick, just some healing herbs, and narcotics.”

“There’s some Zoey magick thrown in there. Don’t give me that look. I know all about you witches.”

Ah, yes, I’ve heard those words before, but unlike times gone by, Ezra’s tone is pleasant, not mocking. “How do you know so much about witches?”

He shrugs, averting his gaze. “Let’s just say I was raised by some rather esoteric thinkers. They dabbled in a bit of everything.”

“The best way to raise a child if you want my opinion. How are you and Andrew doing?”

Yes, I’m changing the topic. Talking about Thaddeus Briggs does things to my heart and hormones, neither of which I can control anymore.

But Ezra has no intention of switching gears. “He’s fallen for you, Zoey. I see it in his face. Before you argue with me, know that I see it in your face, too. You two are terrible at hiding your emotions.”

Why bother denying it? Ezra knows the truth. “He’s going to break my heart.”

“By loving you? I don’t think that’s how it works, Zoey.”

“He’s not going to be allowed to love me. Despite his protests, he will make that alliance with Nataly.”

“How are you so sure?”

Okay, Thadd will likely never speak to me again or fire me, or both, but I prepare to divulge everything to Ezra. Hindsight may be 20/20 on this conversation.

“Charwood is in trouble. They lost a prime investor, and the monies are due by Samhain. They don’t have it, but Nataly’s family does. The caveat is he has to make her his wife, thus securing an alliance.”

Ezra’s jaw drops. “I suspected something, but I kept quiet. I should have confronted him months ago.”

“He didn’t want you worrying. He doesn’t want any of his employees worrying.”

“We’re far more than employee and employer. He’s like my younger brother, which was a totally unexpected friendship. I came here prepared to dislike him, thinking he would be a snob and disdainful. But he wasn’t. Quite the opposite. So damn dashing he’s impossible to dislike.”

Isn’t that the truth?

“Zoey, is that why you aren’t careening headfirst into loving Thadd? This situation with Charwood?”

Blinking back tears, I nod. “I already love him, but if I get any deeper, I’ll never let him go.”

“That’s what I want to hear. I’m guessing you aren’t attending the corporate dinner tonight?”

“No. Nataly will be there and no doubt hanging all over Thadd. I’m not that much of a masochist.”

“You should go and put her in her place.”

“That’s the trouble. It seems her place is next to Thadd, which is the last place I want her to be. I’ll be at the Irish pub, drowning my sorrows and playing drunken darts.”

“Lovely and safe activity. Andrew and I will be by right after the dessert is served. Wait for us?”

I nod, giving Ezra a peck on the cheek as he heads back upstairs.

Me? I hang around the lounge, hoping to catch a glimpse of Thadd, some sign that loving him is the right thing to do.
