Finding Courage to Accept the Redeeming Power of God
Despite how defiled Bathsheba might have been when King David took her, the next time he came to Bathsheba he would do so not as the thoughtless adulterer but as a comforting husband. God would also bless Bathsheba by allowing her to have a close and intimate relationship with her son. While his father, David, might have disrespected Bathsheba in the beginning, God would redeem even that, by filling her son, King Solomon, with a deep love and respect put on display for his mother seen in 1 Kings 2:19. King Solomon stood to meet his mother, Bathsheba, bowing down to her. Oh, friend, how I love the redeeming sweetness of God to allow us to see firsthand the respect Bathsheba is shown from this son of David. And how beautiful it is that God would allow us to read how King Solomon had a seat brought into his throne room especially for his mother—positioning Bathsheba at his right hand, making her a treasured advisor.
It also takes courage to parent with confidence when the voices of guilt and shame ask: Who do you think you are to steer a child toward integrity-based living? You’ve made all the mistakes in the world and your child-rearing is fruitless! Friend, don’t listen to these voices of condemnation. You can parent confidently, as I believe Bathsheba must have, knowing God can redeem all things and will use our weaknesses to help us parent with transparency and power. Don’t shrink back from holding God’s standard just because you failed to meet it once upon a time.
It takes courage to say no to ourselves when sin wants us to give in. And it takes courage to recognize God as a filling agent for the empty recesses of our broken hearts when our husbands have gone astray. It takes spiritual maturity for us not to want simply to prove we can still captivate another man’s heart. Friend, receiving no attention is better than capturing the wrong attention. And we’d all be wise to learn from Bathsheba and David that no sin ever goes undiscovered. Every sinful wrong will be exposed, in time.13 I’m so thankful that while we were yet sinners, Jesus died for us.14
Imagine the kind of courage it must have required for Bathsheba to refuse to allow David’s sinful actions to ruin her life. Even when we feel we are the victims in any given circumstance, it takes courage to take a good, hard look at the situation and let go of the shame, the guilt, the voices of condemnation, so that true healing can come. And sometimes courage will help us own our part of the fault, if there is any to be owned. Courage will help us stand confidently, knowing that although we were wronged, hurt, abused, and perhaps even abandoned, we are more than conquerors through the One who created us. Even if we have instigated the trouble at hand, God is bigger than our sins and failure.
