17.3.2 Cotton-Rice Intercropping

Intercropping cotton in rice is promising under particular environments of erratic monsoon seasons. Although limited reports are available, however, rice cotton intercropping improved the performance of this system. Considering rice water requirements, rice is grown in furrows while cotton on ridges. In this ridge furrow system, the width of ridges is maintained at 15 cm high and 40 cm at base to provide optimum space for cotton. Rice transplanting is done in non-puddled but soft moist soil in furrows without standing water. The distance between rice seedlings is kept at 30 cm to keep them exposed for light. Planting geometry is maintained as one row of cotton after two rows of rice. Overall performance of the rice cotton system was improved by attaining 1.5, 2.5 and 3.9 t ha−1 yield of cotton, rice grain and rice straw, respectively (Kaddar and Ray 1985). A picture of cotton-rice intercropping is shown in Fig. 17.2.
