ROYAL WEDDING COUNTDOWN :

Still Three Days

“You’re kidding me,” Evie said through my cell phone. “Seriously?”

“I’m not kidding,” I said seriously. “Seriously.”

“Okay, let me see if I’ve got it,” my best friend said. “Your tour was canceled because of paparazzi, the mean girl tried to sabotage you with your own cell phone but once again her plans backfired with you looking like the good guy—er—girl, and, speaking of guys, the one you’re hanging out with is a lord?”

“Wow,” I said. “You’re a really good listener.”

“Okay,” Evie said. “I have only one question. Why is your voice so echoey?”

“I’m in a royal restroom,” I told her. “It’s the only place I could get reception.” I waited. “Evie? Are you still there?”

“You’re talking to me from a bathroom?” Evie finally said. “When you could be hanging out with the lord???”

“Um,” I said. “You’re making it sound like a religious thing.”

That got us both cracking up. I was s-o-o-o glad I’d called. I always felt better after talking to Evie.

“I’d better go,” I told her. “The burgers are probably about done by now. I need to make sure Pandora doesn’t poison mine.”

“Have you figured out what that girl is up to yet?” Evie asked. “Is she going after you, or Belle, or the prince?”

“I don’t know what she’s trying to do,” I sighed. “Or why.”

“Well, don’t let her get to you,” Evie said. “You’ve got more important things to think about. Oh, before you go, Claire?”

“Yeah?” I said, looking into the mirror over the sink. Everything in here was fancy and polished. Except me.

“Keep me posted?” Evie asked.

“Well, yeah,” I said, applying a last swipe of lip gloss. “Meanwhile, would you do a search for ‘Yorkshire Dales’? Tristan lives there, and I don’t know what the heck a dale is, so I was like, ‘right, uh-huh, the Dales, of course . ’”

I could hear Evie laughing as she hung up.

Okay. Time to get back out there and help Belle. I began to open the door, when I heard a voice in the hallway. Her voice. I froze, leaving the door open a crack, and listened.

“But it wasn’t my fault the plan failed,” Pandora was saying.

“Was the prince at the exact location I had scheduled for him?” an old woman’s voice said.

“Yes, Aunt Cornelia,” Pandora said in a little voice that didn’t sound like the mean girl I knew.

“Well, it is a setback,” the woman said. “But only a slight one. The Fates are on our side, my dear, and the outcome is assured. The commoner is no match against destiny!”

And then the old woman let loose a cackle that Gave. Me. Chills.

Go away, I pleaded silently. And they did. Pandora went one way; Aunt Cornelia went the other. I waited for a minute to make sure the coast was clear.

Plantaganet, Lancaster, York, Tudor, Stuart . . . , I chanted to calm myself, and then I got out of that bathroom ASAP. I found everyone, including Pandora, just down the hall in a large
