CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

________

ROAN

I watched Safiya and Meriah disappear with Tristan in tow, and blew out a breath. Even though I knew she had her nascáil, and I knew Tristan was the best of us to shield her, I still had to fight the terror of watching her slip out of sight.

One breath and then another, I forced myself to face the thing which had taken root in me. Safiya was right—this would never go away. But we could not live our lives with her entirely in my sight.

I wanted to have a normal life with her and the others. Free from Malum and the need to look over our shoulders at every turn. I wasn’t hopeful, but I still wanted it.

“Stop standing in the door like you’re three seconds away from following her,” Adrian said from behind me. “Doing something else will help.”

“Care to spar in the garden?”

He grinned. “And let you ruin my beautiful face before tonight? Not a chance.”

I chuckled, letting him lift my spirits the way he was attempting to. Tonight was a hastily made plan. Mor’s discussion with the Kahin of Hacht’s temple was not only about the barrier at the border. After our talk during the forging, we’d agreed we wanted to marry Safiya. But we’d also said we would wait and see how the search for the Touchstone went.

The reality of Malum changed all of that. If he was watching, and if he had any intention of killing her, then we didn’t want to wait. We wanted her to be our wife, if she would have us.

We walked toward the back of the house. “What if she says no?”

Kestrel now sat in the courtyard with a book open across one knee. The book Tristan had brought back from the King. “She won’t.”

Adrian sat down on another chair. “I agree. I don’t think she’ll say no.”

Mor stood in the doorway to the kitchen, watching us. “I want to know what Malum knows. Saf wasn’t wrong. He could find it first if he’s been tracking our research.”

The very thought grated under my skin. “At the very least, he can only travel as far as he can ground, and not far enough to search every place that’s been mentioned. Nor would I think he wants to. In spite of his anger, he still needs to keep up some kind of appearance in Hyanelle.”

“Does he?” Kestrel asked. It was a true question. “Malum has only ever held onto his image by sheer force, and now that he’s scarred and has lost the woman he announced to the world would be his Khasira, he might have given up the illusion.”

“Maybe some of it,” I conceded. “But that illusion is part of his power.”

Adrian created a ball of light, idly spinning it around his hands. Kestrel was the one keeping the shield in place around us now. “He may not care. He won’t need illusions if he has both Saf and the Touchstone. Nothing will matter, and there will be nothing to stop him.
