Chapter 7

Everly

Everything is clearer. Crisper. From the finest details of my mate’s face to the scents swirling around us. Every sound is amplified and sharper than it had been before. The sound of the battle raging just a few yards away is like hearing it through an amplified surround sound at the movies. It’s almost overwhelming. I whimper and cover my ears with my hands- er, paws.

“Deep breaths. It will settle in a minute.”

I do as my consort directs. Taking several deep breaths and allowing my newly keen senses to wash over me and get used to having yet another voice in my head. One that is both me, yet not. I’ve gotten used to heightened senses from when my magic fused with Axel’s, but this is on a whole new level. As if what I’ve experienced thus far is just a taste of what it’s like to be a shifter.

“Kind of trippy,” I laugh through our mate link. “But aside from being sore from my muscles contorting during the shift, I feel pretty damn good. No pain at all from my lost battle with that boulder.”

“Glad to hear it. By the way, your wolf is stunning, just like your human. She’s a pale golden brown, the color of your hair as a human. And your wolf’s eyes are the same incredible blue but now with the gold of your wolf as a ring around the outside.”

Slowly sitting up, which is hella weird as a wolf, I look down at the large paws covered in fur attached to what used to be my arms. I bring one to my face and inspect it closely. Sharp claws cover soft pads and the pale fur over them. Axel sits up next to me and nuzzles my neck. I take in a lungful of his scent into my wolf. It both comforts her and has her an instant, wanton mess.

“MATE!” she screams inside my head. It’s loud and emphatic and so sure of her reaction – not a shred of doubt to be found. I wish everyone could have this opportunity. It would surely result in a lot fewer divorces and a lot less domestic violence.

Scenting her mate, my wolf does everything she can think of to get closer to Axel’s wolf. She even rolls over onto her back, head back and legs spread like a little hussy. Axel stands over me, his large wolf ready and able to ward off any threat that might come at me. He lowers his muzzle to my neck and licks there. It does something to me that I can’t quite explain. It settles me, as if something had me on edge for my entire life until he did that.

“Hate to break up this lovefest, but we got a vamp to kill.” Kat breaks into my thoughts startling me. I look at Axel to see if he heard it too.

“Since your wolf submitted to me as your mate, you now share our pack link,” Axel explains.

I hadn’t realized what my actions had meant, but my wolf knew.
