CHAPTER FIFTEEN

DECEMBER

Lindy paced her apartment. How had December fifth come so fast?

She stared at her suitcase and the boxes of wrapped gifts beside it. She’d debated long and hard on what to get each member of the Flint family. Ken and the kids were easy. It was the extended family that required consideration. She had no idea if they’d buy her gifts, so the ones she bought had to be good choices. Not too expensive in case they didn’t get her anything, and she hoped they didn’t. But not too cheap in case they did. She needed balance. In the end, she was certain she had it right. She hoped.

She should get on the road. She’d planned to be gone almost two hours ago but after a long sleepless night worrying about her visit, she finally fell asleep around five and then had slept in.

She was awake now, barely, and still one hundred percent certain going back to the ranch was a huge mistake. Unfortunately, she had made a deal with her children and a promise to them was, in her opinion, a solid, unbreakable legal contract. She couldn’t and wouldn’t go back on her word. Only death would stop her. She felt a touch guilty for jokingly thinking death might be better than spending three weeks with her ex-husband. Not because he wasn’t a nice guy, but because he was.

After their incredible sexy, romantic evening, she could easily picture herself seducing him again. They really used to burn up the sheets. Good sex was one thing, she’d had that a time or two in university, before she met Ken. But good sex with someone you love, someone whose heart touched yours was beyond beautiful. Every fiber of her being craved to go there again.

“Stop thinking about it,” she ordered herself.

She wandered into the kitchen and got a drink. She double checked that everything was unplugged or shut off. Denise would swing by a couple times and check the place, though neither of them anticipated any troubles. Her building was fairly new and well maintained.

Her cellphone chimed with a new message.

Ken - Are you on the road yet?

Lindy - Getting ready to load. I’ll be gone in ten. Just waiting for Denise so I can give her a key. I’ll text when I leave.

Ken - K
