Chapter Sixteen

I was still tired when I heard Sammy chatting in his bed at seven in the morning. Last night, I had excused myself almost as soon as Kip came in, claiming exhaustion, but lay in bed until nearly three a.m., my mind racing. I contemplated so many things: how I shouldn’t have put myself in this position—mixing business with pleasure—my Cinderella complex, my feelings about Robert.

I quickly threw myself together and went to get Sammy. We had our usual conversation as I entered, Sammy asking for Mommy, and me explaining that she’d be home soon. I took him back to my room for a few minutes and let him play with my bottles of shampoo while I finished getting ready. Then we went to the kitchen for breakfast.

Anna tended to Sammy while I went to check on Paul. When I peeked in, I was taken aback to see Robert kneeling next to Paul’s bed, talking with him about his mom. Robert noticed me peering in and smiled.

“Good morning,” he said to me as I opened the door wider.

“Morning.” I followed his gesture to sit down next to him.

“Paul was just asking me about his mom and dad and how things would work now that they weren’t together.” I nodded in understanding.

Paul piped up. “Uncle Robert told me that it would be different.” He was using his best grown-up voice.

“That’s true,” I said. “Your Uncle Robert knows what he’s talking about.” I half-winked at Robert. “What do you think it will be like?” I asked Paul.

“I think I’ll probably be with Mom the most,” Paul added insightfully.

“Well, you’ll probably get to spend time with both your mom and dad, but they’ll live in different houses. You’ll get to have two houses, which means two sets of toys and two places to play. That might be fun,” I said.

“Will you like being with your mom?” Robert asked.

“Yes! She’s the best mom! She does lots of fun stuff.”

Paul was getting out of bed, so I reached over and pulled out his dresser drawer, handing him an outfit. “Why don’t you get dressed and meet us in the kitchen for breakfast? Let’s see what Anna has for you this morning.”

Robert held the door by its crystal knob. He opened it wider at my approach and motioned for me to exit first. As I was leaving, Paul called out, “I hope it’s pancakes!”

“Have you eaten?” Robert asked as we walked down the hallway.

“Not yet.”

“Why don’t you sit with me and the boys and have some breakfast?” he offered.

“That would be nice,” I peered up at him, but he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking down the hallway, a thought seemingly on his lips.

I was on my second cup of coffee when Kip joined us in the kitchen. He immediately surveyed the table—I was sitting next to Robert, having breakfast with the boys. He walked over and stood behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders. It felt slightly uncomfortable, just a little forced.
