CHAPTER 11

Natalie enjoyed the flight home. It was as quick as their ride to Scotland, but they flew through storm clouds and bolts of lightning. None of which affected her, as she was cocooned in a bubble of magic. She could actually see the static charge brush against the invisible shield Cole had erected around her. It was magical and comforting. She was almost sorry when the flight ended, but she had plans for tonight.

Cole landed in the parking lot of Inn Plain Sight. The store was closed now, and she assumed Mara had come and helped Tempest while they were in Scotland. Funny how she left that detail to Cole to work out. She never ditched her shifts at the store and yet she hadn’t thought twice about leaving the place she had come to think of as home. When he didn’t extend his wing to allow her to slip down, she tapped his scales.

“Hey, I need to hurry. Jake will be here to pick me up in less than an hour. We took longer than I anticipated,” she said.

You are far too eager to spend the evening with another man. The bite in Cole’s voice was unmistakable.

Though it would do nothing, she smacked the silver scales harder. “He isn’t some man. He is one of my best friends.”

Cole shifted his weight, causing his claws to scrape the pavement. If he is just a friend, then you should have no problem inviting me or canceling your date with…

Natalie did not allow him to finish. She jumped down onto his wing. Had he not lowered it, she could have broken her neck, but as mad as she was that he thought he could dictate her life, she knew he would never allow any harm to come to her. She straightened the purse around her chest and strode to the apartment without looking back. “I am not having this conversation with you.”

Be careful, my little druid. I am not human and the rules of your society do not apply to me.

Natalie turned as she reached the stairs that led up to her loft. “It’s painfully obvious what you are.”

And what is that?

“A Neanderthal. At least your barbaric ideas on how a woman should act are, anyway.”

I am not trying to control you, Natalie.

She crossed her arms. “Just who I date.”

You said it was not a date! he growled.

Natalie turned and ran up the steps. She felt Cole attempt to connect with her mind, but she blocked him out. Mara had admitted she had done the same thing to Legion at first, and it infuriated the dragon leader. Natalie hoped it had the same effect on Cole. He would not be dictating who she chose to be friends with. She slammed the door and entered the kitchen.

Tempest stood from the couch with a cup of tea in her hand. “Natalie, are you okay?”

“Yes. Just annoyed.” She no longer questioned how her blind roommate knew who had entered the suite. It didn’t matter if it was a dragon, Mara or her.
