She has also heard the notorious phantom noises that echo through the halls. The sounds seem to be left over from another time. “We hear toilets flushing and doors slamming,” she admitted. All the shift’s four employees have been present when this occurs. The patients are, of course, locked in their rooms.

Despite the paranormal activity she has witnessed, Sandy is still waiting for a look at Mrs. Speers. “The patients will often tell us that they see her—especially in Room 6. It is usually those who are terminally ill. I get the sense that she is there to comfort people.”

Recently, two nurses were present when Mrs. Speers sat down on the bed of a startled prisoner. All three people in the room got a good look at her.

Eric, a patient in his forties, was dying of AIDS when Sandy cared for him. “He’d been abandoned by his family, and we spent a lot of time talking,” she said.

One morning when Sandy brought him breakfast, Eric looked up at her with a light in his eyes and said, “There was a woman in here.”

Sandy smiled. “Yes, I know about her,” she said gently.

The experience seemed to change Eric. He was less frightened about death afterward.

“He found comfort in her visit, “ said Sandy.

The Unit Eight building is scheduled for demolition sometime in 2002. Mrs. Speers will soon have to find another wing to visit.
