The Climb

The Black Mountain summit is located on a large flat area in the woods, so a GPS and a hand level come in handy to ensure you hit the highpoint.

Miles and Directions

0.0 Begin at the trailhead (9,895') on the north side of the road and hike into the forest. The trail contours the hillside, and there are a few breaks in the trees to the west with distant views of the Uinta Mountains at Dinosaur National Monument.

1.7 Gain the southeast ridge at 10,265' with the east end of Black Mountain in view, ahead, as the trail begins to climb.

2.2 Switchback right and contour the hillside through a talus field.

2.4 Switchback left and hike straight up to the summit area. Continue past the “Black Mountain East Summit” sign, or enjoy the detour to the overlook, then hike west on the trail and across the flat summit area.

2.7 Depart the trail on the right, and walk to the highest point of ranked 10,860' Black Mountain. Return the way you came (N40 46.998' / W107 22.140').

5.4 Arrive back at the trailhead (N40 45.546' / W107 20.674').
