We were at that awful part in any plan where everything was set in place, and the parts that could move were moving. There was nothing left to do but wait. And hope. Everyone was bedded down for the night, after deciding enough had been decided for one day. We’d finalize plans in the morning.

That meant it was quiet now. Nothing left to do but sleep or stare at the stars, twinkling overhead in the clear, crisp mountain air.

And think. Being alone with my thoughts was never a good thing for me.

I took a long walk through the pack compound, but no one needed my help. No one needed to talk to me. Everything was buzzing along with unusual efficiency.

So I sat down under a shaded tree and let the thoughts come.

I thought of how all this had started with my wandering cubs and how truly lucky both they and I had been that Bailey had run across them. I remembered her mentioning how cubs from her pack hadn’t been so lucky to escape the vampires.

This in itself didn’t make sense.

Vampires were bloodthirsty. There was no denying that. But they were also sentient and prescribed to an extremely strict hierarchy of rules enforced ruthlessly by their queen. I didn’t like them, but they weren’t monsters. My own recent dealings with them were at least enough to prove that. They shouldn’t be going feral enough to kill a child. That went against even their moral code, as loose as it may be.

There had to be something else going on, and I had a strong feeling it had something to do with their deal with Travis and the Yosemite pack. Or perhaps the witches and the pendants.

What if the two were related? Or they had nothing to do with each other at all.

I rubbed my face with my hands, frustrated. If I chose the wrong option to explore, time and resources would be wasted. Maybe more cubs would die.

No, stop thinking like that. The weight of the world doesn’t rest on you.

Right. Not everything was up to me. I would do what I could and when. That was all any of us could do. It was sure as hell more than Travis was doing, and I doubted he had trouble sleeping at night.

I closed my eyes, checking inwardly with my inner wolf. He’d been awfully quiet and content ever since we had both started yielding more responsibilities to others. Wearing down the Alpha and pushing him away until he wasn’t as insistent.

It was almost as though the more you fed the Alpha, the more it grew. More demands. More rage. More anger and harsh decisions, and the urge to take everything out on the pack.

I had already figured that there was more to being an Alpha than issuing orders and forcing people into submission, and I had Bailey to thank for that. But there were more layers to it, wasn’t there? The aggression, the force, none of it had anything to do with being an Alpha.
