Before he hopped in his truck, he paid another visit to Clara, but to his surprise, she was fast asleep. She had showered while he was gone, and the fresh smell of her shampoo wafted into his nostrils as he drew closer to look at her.

She really is breathtaking, he thought, leaning down to kiss the top of her head softly. Clara stirred and moaned softly in her sleep. The urge to crawl into bed with her was overwhelming, but he reminded himself what he needed to do. It was easy to get distracted by Clara, but if he let himself fall into her the way he wanted to, Bolverkr would certainly get the upper hand.

He’s seen me now, Bjorn remembered. It’s only a matter of time before he finds out where I live. Whispering Stream is not a big place and even nestled in the mountains, I can be found.

Inhaling, he withdrew from the bedroom and hurried downstairs, locking the cabin behind him. It was a silly gesture really. No one ever ventured in his direction, and if Bolverkr found his house, he would have no issue knocking down the door in one fell swoop, lock or no lock.

But it gave Bjorn some peace of mind to know that Clara was as protected as he could make her without physically being there.

When this is all done, he vowed, I’m buying a new computer and setting myself up with internet.

The thought was too little too late.

He parked in front of the Whispering Stream Public Library and hopped out of his truck. As he reached for the door, it swung outward and he almost collided with Kendra Zachariah.

“Mr. Solberg!” she said, grinning through her glinting green eyes. “What brings you here on this lovely Saturday?”

Slightly flustered at being confronted, Bjorn forced a smile.

“Research,” he answered in his non-expressive way.

“Research, huh?” she teased. She leaned toward him in her leering way. “Say, that was some crazy business with the bear last night, wasn’t it?”

“What bear?” Bjorn replied, automatically on guard. Kendra’s eyes gleamed.

“You didn’t hear?” she asked innocently. “There was a bear in the parking lot at City Hall.”

Bjorn averted his eyes and shook his head.

“Huh,” Kendra grunted. “Funny. It’s all anyone’s been talking about today. It was all over the news.”

Bjorn shrugged but remained silent.

“They’re looking for the witness,” Kendra added when he didn’t speak. Bjorn felt his complexion wane.

“Witness?”

The redhead nodded conspiratorially.

“Uh huh. There was some tall, dark, handsome man in the parking lot too last night. Caught him on camera.”

Oh no…

As per his custom, Bjorn kept his mouth closed but he found himself balking under Kendra’s gaze.

“You sure you don’t know anything about it?” she pressed. “I mean, there ain’t that many men to fit the description in Whispering Stream, you know?”

Bjorn shrugged.

“I wouldn’t know.”

Her smile widened and Bjorn got the distinct impression that she knew things about him, but he was not about to offer any dirt on him to fuel her gossip. It was merely a piece of knowledge he stored away for the future.
