I’m dressed as humanly as I can manage, which is not a comfortable thing for me. My brothers don’t look comfortable either. We’re all in button-down shirts done up all the way to the collar, which we’ve stolen specially for this occasion. Zara, who’s responsible for putting us in these clothes, looks much more natural and comfortable in her soft cotton sundress.

But we aren’t complaining. She’s the one with experience blending into the human world. And if we’re going to rent an apartment in Bozeman—the nearest human city to Shifter Town—and blend in, we’re going to have to pass for humans.

The realtor turns and looks us all over again. I can tell she knows there’s something weird about us. “What did you say your situation was?” she asks.

“They’re my boyfriend’s brothers,” Zara says, pointing to me and Elliot. We decided that Chan would pose as the boyfriend because Zara says he looks the most human. I’m not sure exactly why. I mean, I get why Elliot’s hair raises red flags, but what’s so inhuman about me?

Your muscles, she told me fondly, and kissed me.

And it makes sense. It does. I’m just annoyed that I can’t be the one with my arm around her right now.

“And you’re all planning on living here together?” the realtor asks.

It’s probably the third time she’s asked this question. “We’re all moving to Bozeman together,” Zara explains. “Money’s just a little tight, so we’re looking to pool our resources. That’s why we only need two bedrooms. My boyfriend and I will share the master, and his brothers will take the second room.”

“Are you sure?” she asks. “They’re pretty big guys, and that’s a pretty small bedroom. I have a nice three-bedroom I could show you.”

“That’s not necessary,” Zara says smoothly. “Two bedrooms are a perfect fit for us.”

Actually, of course, two bedrooms are too many for us. That second bedroom’s not going to get any use, probably. The real reason we like this apartment is that we don’t have to pay a month’s rent in advance or anything like that. And the reason it’s like that is because it’s in a shitty part of town.

If we actually were human, this wouldn’t be a safe place to live.

I can see the realtor debating whether or not to bring that up. I see the way she looks at me, assessing my muscles, trying to decide whether I’ve got the strength to hack it in this part of town.

Trust me, lady, I’m fine.

Though he doesn’t look it right now, Elliot is the one she should be assessing. He’s the one who could toast anyone who tried to give us trouble in this part of town.

Apparently, the realtor decides that the three of us are capable of looking after ourselves and Zara. “All right,” she says. “What do you think? Is this the place?”

She’s looking at Chan, but he falls back a pace to let Zara do the negotiating because she’s the only one of us who’s done this before.

“We can rent month to month?” Zara asks.
