It might have been right before Christmas, but James Coxwell was on a mission. Heâd had a scare but he was going to take a lesson from it. He was determined to look at every house available for sale in greater Rosemount and choose one. He remembered Dinah Dishman from high school and was glad that she knew the town as well as she did. There had to be a reason she was the most successful real estate agent in town.
She looked good, trim and professional in her Chanel jacket and dark trousers. Her snow boots seemed a bit incongruous, but he supposed they were practical. Maralys had suggested they wear shoes they could remove easily and Dinahâs boots had no laces either. She shoved a chunk of streaked hair behind her ear, her intensity reminding him of a much younger Dinah.
âItâs not as promising as it looks,â she told him and Maralys when they met in her informal office on the morning of the twenty-fourth. She had commandeered the corner table in the diner on Main Street, just down the block from Jenâs knitting store. âThere are seven properties, but we can dismiss half of them right away.â
âReally?â Maralys said, smiling as the waitress brought her a cup of coffee.
James declined the coffee. âWhy?â he asked Dinah.
She angled her laptop so he could see the display. âThis one is a convenience store on the highway with living accommodations behind. Itâs being sold as a business.â
âNo,â Maralys said.
âExactly,â Dinah agreed. âThis one is a small apartment building.â
âArenât the commercial listings separate?â James asked.
âNot when the owner lives in, and thatâs often what happens here. We donât have many landlords with numerous properties.â Dinah scrolled down. âThis third one is in a crappy part of town.â
âIs Rosemount big enough to have a wrong-side-of-the-tracks?â Maralys asked.
âYes,â Dinah and James said in unison, then smiled at each other.
âA townhouse,â Dinah continued, then raised her gaze.
âNo,â James said.
âMore than half dismissed then,â she said. âBut then, itâs a time of year when there arenât many listings. There will be more in February.â
âIâd like to look now,â James said.
âAnd prices will probably be better in April,â Dinah advised. âBecause there will be more properties available.â
âThatâs not really a concern. We have a house in Boston to sell, and just want what works for us.â
âWhich is?â
Maralys presented a list. âA bungalow would be best for us and weâd rather have a newer house than an older one.â
âSo the two-story Colonial is out,â Dinah said. âNice house, though. Classic.â
âWe need three bedrooms, at a minimum, and would like an additional room that can be used as an office,â Maralys continued.
âCan it be in the basement?â
James and Maralys exchanged a glance. âA dry basement with a high ceiling,â James stipulated.
âWhat if itâs unfinished?â Dinah asked. âWould you finish it out yourself?â
James and Maralys eyed each other again. She shrugged. âI donât see why not,â James said.
âMight give you a goal,â Maralys said with a twinkle in her eye. âProject manager, coordinating the worker guys so the work is done on time and on budget.
