CHAPTER EIGHT

“WHATEVER YOU’VE BEEN up to these past couple of days, I hope you’ve got it out of your system.”

“And a good morning to you, as well.” Ray flashed Saleh a wide smile as the two men sat down for coffee the next morning in the main restaurant of their hotel. Not even his friend’s sullen attitude could dampen his bright mood this morning. Between the way he’d enjoyed himself yesterday with Mel and the decision he’d made upon awakening this morning, he was simply too content.

“Must I remind you that we’re only here for a few more days and we haven’t even inspected any of the hotels we’ve come out all this way to visit?” Saleh asked, pouring way too much cream into his mug. He chased it with three heaping spoonfuls of sugar, then stirred. How the man stayed so slim was a mystery.

“You’re right, of course,” Ray agreed. “At this point, we should probably split up the tasks at hand. Why don’t you go visit two of the hotels on the list? I believe a couple of them are within a city block of each other.”

“And what will you be doing, Rayhan? If you don’t mind my asking,” he added the last part in a tone dripping with sarcasm.

“I’ll be visiting a prospect myself, in fact, if all goes as planned.”

Saleh released a sigh of relief. “Better late than never, I guess, that you’ve finally come to your senses. Which one of those on the list would you prefer to check out?”

“It isn’t on our list.”

Saleh lifted an eyebrow in question. “Oh? Did you hear of yet another Boston hotel which may be looking for a buyout?”

“Not exactly. Though the place I have in mind is indeed interested in locating a buyer. Or so I’m told.” He couldn’t wait to run the idea by Mel, curious as to what her exact reaction might be. He hoped she’d feel as enthusiastic about the prospect as he did.

Saleh studied his face, as if missing a clue that might be found in Ray’s facial features. “I don’t understand.”

Ray took a bite of his toast before answering, though he wasn’t terribly hungry after the large dinner he and Mel had shared the evening before. He’d definitely overindulged. The woman certainly knew what he might like to eat. In fact, after just a few short conversations, she already knew more about him than most people he’d call friends or family. He’d never quite divulged so much of himself to anyone before. Mel had a way of making him feel comfortable enough to talk about himself—his hopes, the dreams he’d once had. Around her, he felt more man and less prince. Definitely a new experience. He knew better than to try to explain any of it to the man sitting across the table. Best friend or not, he wouldn’t understand. Ray couldn’t quite entirely grasp what was happening himself.

“I’m considering, perhaps, looking at smaller options,” he answered Saleh. “Something different than the grand international hotel chains.
