Chapter 6

When she nipped lightly at his lower lip, Easton let out another guttural sound that vibrated all the way to his bones. Fuck, she was a wild little thing.

He yanked her up hard against his chest. Not that there’d been any open space left between them. He bent her backward over his hand splayed across her butt. That part of her was nicely curved and lushly padded in contrast to her other pointy parts.

Holding her at that precipitous angle, he stared down at her for a long moment, admiring how the restless shimmer of firelight through the grate danced on her skin in waves of dark gold and shadow. “One chance, Dena,” he said in a husky voice. “I’ll give you one chance to run.”

She leaned all her weight into his hand and stared up at him through half-closed eyes. “Are you going to chase me?”

His fingers dug into her backside possessively. “I’m trying to be a gentleman. Or at least a decent man.”

“I like the beast.”

With a groan, he brought his mouth crashing down on hers again, at the same time bending her even further over his arm until she would’ve fallen. Except he took her to the ground with inexorable tenderness. The nest of their discarded blankets softened the slate floor, and the summertime warmth of the potbelly stove pulsed around them.

He positioned himself above her on all fours, still kissing her as if she had the breath he needed to stay alive. When she reached for his stiffly jutting cock, he grabbed both her wrists in one fist and stretched her out. She arched beneath him, driving her hips up in wordless demand.

“Dena,” he murmured.

“Beast,” she countered.

The word flickered through him like the flames escaping the cast iron. He hadn’t been this out of control since…

Ever.

The fear and shame of a boy born with a monster inside, abandoned by one parent and only half accepted by the other, submerged in the hot amber eyes of the wild thing in his embrace. He held her tight as she writhed, not trying to escape, trying to get closer. As if…

As if she not only accepted him but wanted him. All of him.

Beast.

His heart pounded like he’d been running again, his throat tight with feral sounds. Dropping his head to nuzzle under her ear through the tangles of her bramble hair, he tried to think of what to say to explain what this meant to him. He always received high marks from his students for communication and accessibility, yet now he felt as mute as the wolf. Worse, because the wolf at least could speak its heart with a look and its soul with a song.

All he had was his touch, and he touched her all over, hoping he could show her what he felt.

Her pulse skipped and raced under his lips, like sparkles on a rushing river, and he kissed an exploratory path down the column of her throat as if he was making his way to the source of all waters.
