Chapter Fifteen
"Come out, come out wherever you are~!"
âI cowered deeper into the snowbank I was hiding in. I couldnât feel my fingers and was probably getting frostbite, but I couldnât take the risk of escaping. I just prayed to whatever god that was willing to listen that I wasnât about to get caught.
Me and Luke's family arrived at the park for the snowball fight about an hour ago. Lizzy and Luke's parents found a place to get comfortable so they could watch the show. I barely had a proper introduction with Luke's older sister Caroline and her husband Hector when the snowballs started being thrown at us from every direction. All four of us ran/dove in different directions to keep from getting hit. At first it was this cute and fun thing, the kids were excited to play in the snow with the adults. But it quickly became clear that these little goblins were not messing around. For every snowball I threw, three were thrown back at me. They had no qualms against aiming for the face either.
I had been hiding behind a bench, gathering up a small stockpile of snowballs when baby girl Ella snuck up behind me, quiet as a mouse, and dropped a fistful of snow down the back of my shirt. I jumped up screaming and shaking out my shirt when Carolineâs three boys zoomed in to grab my snowballs and pelt me with them. I quickly realized I was in over my head and just hoped I survived this experience.
After that I quickly went on the defensive, always keeping one snowball with me for protection and just did my best to sneak around the park. I hadn't seen a single adult since the game started and was seriously considering they had all been sacrificed to some sort of snowball god that was helping make these kids invincible when I heard the oldest girl making her rounds. I jumped face first into the nearest hiding spot, which just so happened to be this snowbank that I was freezing to death in.
They say freezing to death is just like going to sleep, right? At this moment that sounded kind of nice.
I had another run in with Caroline's oldest earlier. I was running away from one of her brothers when she caught me and started pelting me. I caught sight of this basket she was carrying around filled with snowballs. She only hit me in the side with one and somehow, in her hands, the nice fluffy snow became softballs. Getting hit by it literally took my breath away. I felt that thing hit me through two jackets and a thick sweater. Luke had told me she was on a softball team. What he hadn't told me was that she was the best pitcher in her league.
I could hear the crunch of snow under boots and tried burrowing deeper into the snowbank. I was about to be caught. I closed my eyes and prepared myself. I could hear the sound of someone walking getting closer and closer.
