Sam wasnât sure what to make of Chloeâs cool, cutting response to a simple invitation to dinner, and his first impulse was to follow her back into the hospital and get her to explain. After the night theyâd spent together, he really hadnât expected her to brush him off like that.
Not that heâd thought sheâd be suddenly head over heels for him, either, nor did he want her to be. He remembered all too well the way sheâd slipped out of his life in San Francisco. Clearly, Chloe Bailey was a master at compartmentalizing and keeping her emotions firmly in check, no matter what she might say to the contrary.
It made him wonder exactly what it was her ex-husband had done, and if whatever it was were to blame for the way she was handling Sam now. That was something else heâd like to corner her and ask her about.
But instead of going after her, he turned and headed back over to the other building. Although it irked him to not demand an explanation, having grown up with sisters and seen how his parents dealt with arguments, he decided to leave her alone for at least the rest of the day.
Not that sheâd sounded angry, Sam thought as he headed back to his office. Maybe she was just a bit overwhelmed by everything and needed some space. Everyone handled situations differently, and just because he was itching to have it out with her didnât mean he had the right to demand that conversation.
Perhaps she was even doubtful of his motivations, both for sleeping with her and for asking her to come and stay with him, and that made her overcautious.
In truth, Sam was a little muddled about his motivations himself, so while he chafed at the decision not to contact Chloe Friday afternoon, it seemed for the best. It might give him a chance to figure out what, exactly, he was doing.
The evening found him uncharacteristically alone at home, leaning on the veranda railing, looking out at the city lights. Usually heâd be out somewhere, playing darts or having a couple of drinks since he wasnât on call, but tonight he wasnât up for it.
It wasnât in his nature to unburden himself to others or look for someone else to solve his problems. Heâd always handled his business himself. Even after Vicky died, the only person heâd spoken to about her pregnancy was Kendrick, who was his oldest friend. More like a brother, really. In Samâs eyes, thereâd been no need to make his parents sadder than they had already been or open himself up to a new, more dreadful level of pity.
Chloe, at least, had told him about the baby immediately, and he had to give her credit for that. Sheâd also advised him that, realistically, they didnât need him, which was something he both knew was true and resented.
The thought came to him then that not only did he want this baby but he wanted to be neededâto be an indispensable part of, if not Chloeâs life, then his childâs.
