Of course you found this. I couldn’t resist leaving you one last letter in our secret place.

I have something I can no longer keep a secret. It has rested heavy on my heart for years. I’m hoping Regina has told you by now, but I feel you have the right to know, even though it isn’t my secret to tell. I kept my promise not to say a word until my dying day, which is why you’re getting this letter after I’m gone.

Your father was not killed when you were a baby like Regina told you. His name is James Jones. Jimmy. A boy from our high school days back in Hays, Kansas. I have no idea what happened to him. Jones. A hard name to track down.

Regina and Jimmy dated our senior year. And, well, no one knew about you. Regina and I left town when she found out she was with child. I’ve been unable to locate him even though I’ve tried. I contacted a few leads, but none of them panned out.

I’m not sure if you’ll be able to find him either. He’s long moved away from Hays. All I know is his birthday is in December and he was interested in engineering. I know, not much. Right? He was going to stay and work a few years before trying to go to college. I have no idea if he ever found a way to go to college.

I hope you already knew all this and maybe you’ve even met him. I’m sorry I couldn’t persuade Regina to search for him and tell him about you. For your sake, I tried, but you see where that got me. Regina left and took you with her.

I’ve missed you every day since you’ve left and I pray you’ve had a wonderful life. Just know that I’ve always loved you.
