He kept cuddling and kissing her during lunch, and Leda chuckled. “Aw. You two are adorable.” She snorted. “Terrifying but adorable.”

Jess opened her mouth and took the carrot and dip that went with her sandwich. She giggled and leaned her head against Caber.

She was chewing the carrot when a soft knock at the door got her attention.

Leda got up and opened the door. Jess nearly choked when she saw her brother standing there. “Um, I need to talk to Jess.”

Jess swallowed. She got up and patted Caber on the shoulder. “I’ve got this.”

He took her hand and kissed it. “You aren’t alone. Let me know if you need me.”

She nodded. “I’ll be fine.”

Walker and Hark looked at her seriously and nodded, “Just let us know if you need a hand.”

She smiled. “I have a good set of lungs.”

The table at large said, “We know.”

She laughed and walked out with Kane. “This way.” She walked with him and enjoyed the daylight and the thick green meadows.

“So, what brings you here, aside from your car?” She started the conversation.

Kane sighed. “The herd did an audit, and I need to make reparations.”

“Oh, the herd wants you to do it. Okay.” She was disappointed, but someone had to start him off.

“Ariadne did an audit of our finances. She’s really quite clever, you know. When did Mom and Dad run out of money?”

“Six years ago. When I started fighting regularly. It paid their bills and let me save up. I have about three years of payments left for the private hospital.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I tried to tell you, but you bring bullheaded to an all-time high.” She shrugged. “So, I did it myself.”

“What happened with Morris?”

She froze. “What do you know about that?”

“He paid a ridiculous amount for your violins and said he would keep them for you when you wanted them. Why was he so sure that they meant that much to you?”

“What are you really asking?”

“Did Morris hurt you?” He stopped and stared at the fields and trees.

She answered simply. “Yes. And if he thinks of me like that one more time, it will be his last. No more details for you, but I took care of it.”

“When?”

“Just after I joined the orchestra and was preparing for the nationals.” She sighed. “There was a patron event, and he was eager to meet me. He collected young women like me.”

“Where was I?”

“Meeting Max. Joining the herd. Mom and Dad were at the hospital. I was a sitting duck.”

“He hurt you?” Kane snorted, and visible vapour shot from his nose.

“Not enough to require medical attention. He was very precise. He had practice. I was definitely not the first.” She shrugged. “There is a trophy case at his home, and only those like me know what they mean.”

“I failed you.”

“You were not responsible for me. I had parents or, at least, one at the time. She failed me, but I don’t blame her. Her husband was in a coma, and she needed to be at his side.” She sighed.
