Japanese Type 89 medium tanks trundle through an occupied northern Chinese city while the Chinese population look on. The Type 89 was a slow tank with a maximum speed of 15mph and was poorly armoured with a maximum thickness of 15mm. However, it was well armed with a 57mm gun and several machine guns and had first been produced in 1929. Although not a good design, the tank was more than adequate for the war in China as it faced little opposition from Nationalist armour.

Nationalist Chinese antiaircraft gunners defend a city with their Italian Canone-Mitragliera da 20/65 Modello 35 during the fighting of 1938. This 20mm gun was one of a number of types of light anti-aircraft gun used by the Nationalists in the 1930s. Light guns like this made up the vast majority of antiaircraft defences of Nationalist cities and were usually moved from location to location.
