Wicker Park.

The 606 is one of two massive public spaces created under the Emanuel administration. The other is the new Chicago Riverwalk, which runs six blocks west from State Street at the north edge of the Loop, an architecturally spectacular corridor near the Tribune Tower, the Wrigley Building, Marina City, and Trump Tower, which runs under a series of beautiful old bascule bridges. It’s part of the mayor’s mission to make the Chicago River the next equivalent of Chicago’s legendary lakefront, which includes boathouses on the north and south branches designed by the beloved local architectural star Jeanne Gang. It marks the next stage in the evolution of the city—Chicagoans turned the unprepossessing waterway into the engine (and the sewer) of a global economic powerhouse. As its economy evolved away from industry and agriculture to finance and law, it ceased to be useful for shipping goods and carrying away their waste. So Chicagoans are re-engineering it again, from work to play, to serve the contemporary needs of the ever-striving Second City and its eternal dream of being a global city.
