CHAPTER 23
Noah
I wasnât lying when I said I couldnât get enough of Genevieve. I just couldnât seem to stop touching her. Lining up for breakfast, sitting down eating it, moving to the lounge area to wait for Rebecca Jones, I just had to have my hands on her all the time. Judging by the way she snuggled in next to me on the couch, she felt the same.
Rebecca surprised us all when she stepped to the front of the room and announced that there was no clue for today, because there had been a break down in logistics. Our regular schedule would resume tomorrow, but in the meantime, we had the day to ourselves. She reiterated that the lockdown rules still applied, so any ideas I might have had of heading to the drug store went up in flames. Still, it would be nice to have a change of pace and just hang out. And thatâs exactly what we did: hung around in the break room for a while, then played some pool.
âIâm liking this,â Phoenix said, flapping her hand to indicate us. I was sitting on a stool with Genevieve between my knees, leaning back against me, my arms around her waist.
âMe too,â Genevieve answered. With her back to me, I could picture the sweet smile that curved her lips.
Not long after that, Genevieve turned around to look at me and said, âLetâs get out of here.â
âOut of here?â Since we werenât allowed to leave the hostel, our options for âout of hereâ were pretty limited.
âYeah. Come with me.â She took my hand and I followed her to the kitchen and watched while she made two cups of coffee. Then we headed upstairs. Stopping off at our room, she grabbed my sleeping bag and threw it over her shoulder before continuing all the way up, to a rooftop terrace that overlooked the snow-covered streets of Memphis.
âAre you serious? Itâs freezing up here.â
âChicken,â she replied, grinning at me. âHold this.â Handing me her mug, she dropped the sleeping bag onto an outdoor sofa nestled under an overhang, just enough under cover not to be wet. Climbing up onto it, she flicked the switch on the bar heater attached to the roof. Then she sat on the sofa, unzipped the sleeping bag and spread it out, patting the seat next to her invitingly. Smiling, I handed back her coffee mug and sat next to her. âHowâs this?â she asked with a smile.
âStill fucking freezing.â
âBut worth it?â
âYeah.â I tucked the sleeping bag around us as best I could, and between that and the overhead heater, it actually wasnât too bad. Slipping her boots off, Genevieve put her feet in my lap and rested her head back on the sofa, letting out a sigh of contentment. Then we just sat there, drinking our coffee, watching the hustle and bustle of the street below. The daylight slowly faded, the streetlights blinked on, Christmas lights lit up the store windows. Sitting there in the quiet with Genevieve, I had a rare, fleeting feeling ofâ¦something I almost couldnât name.
