Chapter Eighteen

The Chains That Bind

“Take your filthy hands off me, you muscle-bound magical jerk.” Josie struggled against the chains that bound her to some type of cold heavy metal object barely wide enough to sit on, with no back support. Slivers of moonlight cut through the dirty windows, but it was still too dark to ascertain what type of building she was being held in. One thing she was certain of was the building hadn’t been used in quite a while.

She coughed and sneezed in the dust-infused air that irritated her throat and her sinuses as he commanded the chains bind her. The links shimmered a muted gold as they wound around her, stopping once before he grabbed the end and forced the chain around her neck, securing it with conjured heat. Once she’d thought she heard voices, car tires on pavement, maybe a door slamming in the far-off distance. But she couldn’t be sure.

When she screamed, he slapped his hand over her mouth. She sank her teeth deep into his palm, but it wasn’t enough. He continued muttering words she couldn’t understand, and now she wasn’t able to utter a sound. Stepping away from her, he rotated slowly in the middle of the floor, still muttering, his arms outstretched. Apparently, his efforts blocked the moonlight from the windows and silenced any outside sounds. I gotta get out of here.

A lot of good those police dramas she watched on TV did her now. The victim usually talked her way out of the situation or distracted the kidnapper and escaped. She could barely move without the chain cutting off her oxygen. Talking. Yeah, that was a moot point.

When his back was turned, the chains warmed and pulsed occasionally as if they were trying to tell her something. What, she couldn’t fathom, and it was all probably her imagination anyway. In her mind, she replayed the incident in the back yard of the Studio.

The leader—whatever he was—Fae, I think—suggested there was magic in my veins or I wouldn’t be able to see them. I saw them clear as day. Or maybe it was a group hallucination. Hell, maybe this whole thing is a hallucination. She tried to straighten. The links tightened, and she choked. Nope, these chains are real.

For a couple of beats, the links heated, pulsed, then loosened. She struggled and the chains loosened even more. With the slack, she was able to move her arms a bit, and one hand passed over the phone in her pocket. As she tried to manipulate it out of her pocket, the links suddenly snapped tighter as Kurt strode toward her.

He stroked her cheek with his knuckles. “It doesn’t have to be this way. I can give you more than you can imagine. You’d never want for anything as my…” He hesitated, then whispered, “…wife.”

Bile rose in her throat. She sucked in a breath. His stench was overwhelming as she closed her eyes tight. A plan…I need a plan. Opening her eyes, she blinked up at him adoringly.
