Chapter 36

Griffin had a used book store on Main Street, but he didn’t make much money that way. He hacked his way to success on the stock market being careful not to push hard enough that anyone ever came looking for him.

The bell chimed on our way in and he looked up, sitting behind his laptop at a desk in the back of the shop, books piled up all around him.

“Hey Griff,” I said, ambling toward him. “This is my… partner, Kaz.”

“Hey Silver. Hi Kaz.” He stood, holding his hand out. “Nice to meet you.”

“You too,” Kaz said cordially, shaking hello.

“So what’s up?” Griffin said to me.

“Well, confidentially, I’ve kind of leveled up.”

“Congrats,” he said with a smile. “How so?”

I ignored that question. “Have you ever heard of the Tempestas Blade?”

He thought for a moment and nodded. “Yeah, I think so. It’s in Greece, right?”

Leave it to Griff to know about the blade and it’s location off the top of his head. This is why I thought to go to him. “Not anymore. We think it’s here in the city, being used in some pretty grim rituals.”

He sucked in air through his teeth. “That’s why the British Museum should have kept it.”

I scoffed. “Let's not get into politics, Griff. I’m looking for a grimoire that might have the rituals using this blade.”

Griffin frowned in thought and walked across to a shelf full of books. He took his time perusing them, pulling one out and leafing through before deciding that wasn’t it, putting it away, and looking for another. He did this a few times before Kaz looked at me, skeptical.

“Give him time,” I said.

“Sorry,” Griffin called out. “I’ll be right with you.”

“Thanks,” I called back.

Kaz leaned in toward me and I had to stop myself from grabbing hold of him like a koala. “You know he wants you, right?”

I lifted an eyebrow. “I think you’re projecting now.” Not complaining about that, though. I was sure to get whiplash any moment now with my mood swings.

He shook his head with a grin. I shrugged.

Ten minutes later Griffin came back, no book in his hands. “Sorry,” he said. “I don’t have anything here.”

“Thanks for trying,” I said.

“But,” he said, sitting down in front of his laptop again and typing quickly. “Is this ritual with goats?”

I pressed my lips together. “Nope.”

He looked up at me, alarmed. “Cows?” I shook my head with a frown. His eyebrows went high and his face flushed. “Babies?”

“What? No. Where’s the grimoire with that ritual? I’ll burn it.”

He shook his head. “Someone else already did. Probably. It’s been lost for centuries, I just got nervous. So adult humans, then.”

“I cannot confirm or deny, Griff.”

“Okay, cool.” He looked up at me. “Fire, insects, or entrails?”

Again, I couldn’t school my expression. “Insects? What the fuck?”

He blinked. “Fire or entrails?”

Kaz laughed. “Entrails.”

“For Hekate’s sake, we need to burn a lot of grimoires,” I muttered. Kaz patted me on the shoulder.

Griffin nodded. “That’ll be Kodikes Lithis.”

“The Kodikes Lithis?”

“Yeah, it means the Codes of Oblivion.
