The Dangers of Not understanding the powers of magic in the Age of Reason.
So, here we are, in the early phases of the exponential curve in technological advancement. Things are hotting up, racing ahead and about to get really interesting. We have the head of AI of Google, Ray Kurzweil telling us that by 2030 we’ll be augmented with biomachine interfaces linking us to the cloud and all sorts of funky sci-fi stuff. So entrenched are we in the age of reason, so potent and overwhelming has it become, that perhaps we are racing a bit ahead of ourselves….
For example, there is something called “The Central Paradox” in quantum mechanics, and it’s essentially about how single light photons or single electrons can make wave interference patterns, but when “observed” they collapse and return to particulate patterns instead. In over 100 years of examination of this problem, precisely zero philosophical progress in “understanding or interpreting” the results have been made. This clearly shows us that there are massive gaping holes in our scientific understanding of the universe at large. I do mean gaping holes, not some small details waiting to be tidied up. There is that cat in the box Schrodinger paradox too, and they go on. More recently at the edge of scientific enquiry we’ve discovered that either time can go backwards, or the order of time can be reversed, whatever the case these new discoveries violate an essential scientific cornerstone, that of causality. So a bit like “pop will eat itself” science is essentially beginning to destroy the very paradigm from which it was itself spawned, but only at the very edges of the known. It still works well enough to give us the internet and steam engines and rocket ships. However its eventual failure is guaranteed, or its limits will soon be reached and a new discipline will have to emerge. That discipline, I speculate will have to incorporate consciousness as part of its paradigm, and from where I am sitting that looks an awful lot like the discipline of magic. This may hold some degree of wisdom, science lacks wisdom, lacks empathy, and zero ability to provide any philosophical framework.
Where it perhaps becomes important, vitally important to incorporate aspects of magic with science is at the very cutting edge of science, because there they “may” matter. What do I mean by this?
To much fanfare in 2013 the team at the Large Hadron collider announced that they had “discovered” the famed Higgs Boson, and threw a big party. Today, a little BBC news article (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-36976777 ) quietly states “New particle hopes fade as LHC data “bump” disappears”. They thought they’d discovered a new particle, one they had been searching for, and it “appeared” coincidentally in their data with two separate detectors picking it up at the exact same time, making convincing scientific argument for the discovery. Later on those statistical anomalies vanished and there was nothing left but random noise and frustrated scientists.
You see, what some scientists
