Chapter Ten

For the second time in as many days, Gareth woke up in a moving car.

Once again he was in the backseat. There, however, the similarities ended.

Anne was driving. He was lying on his side covered with a blanket, and he had only one hand.

He cradled the stump of his left wrist against his chest and closed his eyes.

Memories came in a flood. Rafe’s mad eyes, the blade flashing down, pain.

And then Anne.

He opened his eyes again. He was lying with his head behind the passenger seat, so he could see Anne’s face in profile.

The fangs and the yellow eyes were gone. But he didn’t doubt for a second that what he’d seen had really happened.

Anne was a vampire. How had she been turned? And when? He hadn’t scented vampire blood in her, although there was that strange… something. Could she have been turned after he freed her from Rafe? No, that was crazy. There hadn’t been time.

He had never heard of a Fae being turned. They had defenses against vampires. And even if they didn’t, was such a thing possible?

Werewolves couldn’t be turned. Their own supernatural nature made them immune to vampirism. And because they’d never heard of a Fae being turned, it was believed that they, too, were immune. As far as the wolves knew, only humans could be infected with a vampire’s demonic energy.

He remembered seeing Anne attack Rafe like an avenging fury. He’d never seen such pure violence, not even from the most bloodthirsty hunter—whether wolf or human.

He remembered something else, too. He remembered her mouth on the place his hand had been, and the sudden relief of unbearable pain.

And then blackness. He’d passed out, obviously—and somehow Anne had gotten him out of the woods and into this car.

There wasn’t much to see through the windows, other than the night sky. They seemed to be moving fast and steadily, which probably meant a highway.

He swung his legs off the seat and sat up straight. He was naked under the blanket, so he made sure to keep himself covered.

Anne jerked her head around to look at him, stared into his eyes for a moment, and then faced front again. She put on her hazard lights, took her foot off the gas, and pulled off the road. Then she turned the engine off and twisted to face him.

Her face was human again, and just as beautiful as when he’d first seen her. But nothing else was the same.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.”

A short pause. “So… you’re awake.”

“Yeah.”

“You probably have some questions.”

“Yeah.”

Another pause, this one longer. “How do you feel?” she finally asked.

When he’d shifted to sit up, he’d kept his maimed wrist hidden under the blanket. He hadn’t done it consciously, but when Anne looked down at the shape of his arm underneath the blanket, he knew he wasn’t ready for her to see it—or to see it himself.

“I’m fine,” he said after a long moment.

In a way, it was true. There was no pain, as though Anne’s saliva had been some kind of analgesic.
