“So... about this new little... girlfriend of yours...”

Under his breath, Marcus groaned as Tomiko Oshira sauntered into the lushly decorated foyer, her caramel skin glowing like she was fresh from the spa.

“Miko... it's been a while,” Marcus said, shying away from her touch. He hated that she was always touching, teasing, and flirting – the kind of shit that would get a bullet through Marcus's head if the wrong person saw it.

She slid into the empty space on the couch beside him, not bothering to pull down the hem of her dress when it hiked up around her thighs. “I know, which brings me back to my question. I guess Naomi Prescott is the reason you've been treating me like a stranger? You never call, you never come by....” She placed her hand high on his thigh, “I'm starting to think you don't like me, Marcus.”

You're on the right track.

“I don't call or come by because we wouldn't want your old man getting the wrong impression about us, now would we?” Marcus asked, pushing her hand away as he moved over, putting a decent amount of space between them. “You know how he is about his... possessions.”

Tomiko smirked, then shrugged as she bit down on her fingernail. “What he doesn't know, won't hurt him.”

“I'm sure that's the same thing your boy Devonte thought,” Marcus countered, reminding her of the bodyguard who had been caught with his hands in her cookie jar. Marcus wasn't the least bit interested in a similar “stuffed in a trunk alive, car set on fire” kind of fate. Her exotic mix of Asian and Black features were certainly attractive, but nobody was that fine. “Anyway... how do you know Naomi?”

“Oh, Mimi and I go way back. You do know whose niece she is, right?”

Marcus narrowed his eyes. “What are you talking about Miko? And don't start making shit up to start drama. I know how you like to do.”

“Me?” Tomiko giggled. “I would never do anything to purposely cause confusion... but, from the look on your face, I'm guessing your new sweetheart didn't tell you about her family ties... or her criminal record.”

Chuckling, Marcus shook his head. “Naomi does not have a criminal record.”

At least not a public one, he thought, making sure he wore skepticism on his face. There was no doubt about the veracity of Tomiko's information... the question was: how did she get it?

Tomiko grinned. “Well, I guess you would know, wouldn't you, Mr. FBI? What did you do, run a background check on her?”

“I did.”

And that was a verifiable fact. He'd talked Renata into working a bit of covert techie magic, but now, anyone looking for it would see that the same day Marcus saw Naomi at the gym for the first time, he'd used his ID in the system to look her up. No criminal record, and no mention of Damien Wolfe as a relation.

“And it was clean?”

Marcus nodded. “Yes, it was clean, because she's not a criminal.”

“If you say so.”

“Well what do you say, since you two go “way back”.
