Chapter 8

Max wasn’t sure what to think about his mom and Carter. She was relaxed, something he was sure he’d never seen on her before. In fact, it had taken him nearly ten minutes to figure out what was different about her. There were no lines of strain around her eyes and mouth. Carter sat down across from him. Max wasn’t sure about him at all.

“I’d like to have a word or two with you.” He nodded, wondering what sort of stuff he was going to try and make him do. Not that he had a lot of experience with men—none actually—but he knew that people in general always wanted something for nothing. “We’re going to be staying here for a while, and I wanted to know what you might need in the way of stuff for school. Dane said that you were a senior in college with a few majors.”

“Yes, sir.” Carter nodded but said nothing more. For the first time in his life, Max had no idea what to do. “My mom is happy, so you don’t have to butter me up too. We’re doing just fine.”

“She said the same thing about her a few hours ago. I mean about buttering her up. But I want to do this for you. Mom said—” Max asked him why he was calling her mom. “I meant my mom. I’m sorry, I should have been clear. But my mom said that you were using Misha’s computer, and I’d like to get you one of your own. There are things on his that could be…we take pictures sometimes at a scene, and they’re not something I think you should see.”

“You mean the files.” Carter nodded. “I didn’t look at them, but I know what it is you guys do. I looked inside of you. I don’t need a computer for that.”

“I see. And you have any questions about what you’re seeing there? And for the record, I’d really like if you didn’t do that too much. I have nightmares enough with my own memories. I don’t need you having them as well.” Max waited for him to say something to him, like it was none of his business, but he only nodded once. “Be careful what you see there, too. There are memories in my mind that I hate looking at. What we do is…sometimes it’s a messy business.”

Max knew better than to let his guard down. He wasn’t trusting anyone anymore, and least of all this man. Connie had hurt him and nearly gotten him taken from his mom. There were things in their minds, the men who had come into the apartment that day, which still confused and frightened him. But he knew not to tell anyone about what was there.

“You remember the day that Linyah came and told you to bring your power down?” Here it is, Max thought, he wanted him to do something for him, like a dog with a new trick. “Can you tell me what that was? I’m trying to understand what you and Dane are.
