Chapter 4
Her Legacy and Descendants
In August of 1787, Charles Christian wrote to William to inform him that his daughter Carolina was set to marry the Hereditary Count of Wied-Runkel in two weeks time. It is the last letter by Charles Christian stored in the Royal Archives. Carolina indeed married Karl Ludwig on 4 September 1787, but they would have no children. Charles Christian was reported to have felt a “disturbing solitude” upon his wife’s death and he entered into a relationship with a woman named Barbara Giessen and although he denied it, there were rumours of a marriage. The Genealogisches Staatshandbuch, published in 1835, states that Charles Christian married Barbara, the daughter of a barrister, in November 1788 but that information may be incorrect. Charles Christian had an accident on 25 November 1788 and he died of a stroke on 28 November 1788.1
Not all of Carolina and Charles Christian’s children went on to have offspring. Their eldest daughter Maria became a nun at Quedlinburg and Herford. Luise, whose first son tragically died on the day he was born, went on to have two more sons who lived. Frederick and Isabelle Louise went on to have four children, although one died in infancy. Their second son Charles remained unmarried and had no issue. Amalie Charlotte married Victor II, Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym and they had four children. Their last surviving child Henriette went on to marry Duke Louis of Württemberg and they had five children. Some of their children kept in touch with their uncle, even after their parents had died and some of those letters are in the Royal Archives.
Carolina and Charles Christian’s descendants sit on the thrones of Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Spain.
