Chapter 17

Freeway had taken a picture of the hit man when he killed him. He sent the photo to his father and waited for the phone to ring. This war with his father was not going to be easy. His father was never there for him after his mother died in a car accident. Freeway remembered the day his father left him at his grandmother’s house when he was 15 like it was just yesterday.

Hannibal pulled up to his mother’s house with his son, Freeway, in the passenger seat, looking happy to spend time with his father. Hannibal cut the car off and waved at his mother, but she did not wave back because she knew what he was about to do.

“Look, little man, I love having you with me.”

“I love you too, Father.”

“But what I do for a living, I can’t have you around me all the time.”

“Sure, you can, Father. You’re just a construction worker.”

“Son, it’s deeper than that. I only do that to cover up what I really do, and I have not done construction for over four years. I only told you that so you would not worry.”

“So, what do you do for a living?”

“You honestly don’t know what I do for a living?”

“Come on, pops, what is this, a game or something? I know you sell drugs,” Freeway said very nervously to him. His father always seemed angry.

“I don’t want you ever to open your mouth and tell your little friends what I do for a living. Do you understand?”

“Why not? What you do is cool.”

Slap.Hannibal slapped his son’s face.

Freeway balled up, hoping his father would not hit him again. This is why Freeway feared having conversations with his father. He knew how his father never seemed to be happy.

“That’s why I’m leaving you at your grandmother’s house. You’re too green in these streets. Get the fuck out of my car.”

“But, Father—”

“Get the fuck out and don’t come back until you grow the fuck up.”

“But, Father, I don’t want to leave.”

Hannibal jumped out of his car, snatched his son from the vehicle, and threw him to the ground. Freeway could not believe his father treated him this way.

“Look at you! You look sad and sorry. You don’t have the heart to ride with me in the streets.”

“I hate you!” Freeway said while getting up and running to his grandmother’s house. Hannibal got into his car, but his mother stopped him by standing in front of it. She motioned for Hannibal to roll down his window. So he did but with an attitude.

“Ma, what do you want? I got things I’m trying to do.”

“What’s wrong with you? Why do you treat your son this way?”

“Because he’s weak, that’s why.”

“You know, one day, Hannibal, that boy is going to be the death of you.”

“The boy has to grow some balls first,” he said with laughter in the back of his throat.

Hannibal pulled out of the driveway, never to see his son again until years later.
